FCP Effect Editor – Any way to select ALL keyframes and make changes?
Posted by Michael Buday on October 27, 2005 at 2:47 pmHaven’t found a way to do this yet and it’s driving me crazy. Does anyone know of a way to grab more then one, or all the keyframes in an effect to move them in time, or to perform global changes to them?
For example, I might want to select three out of four SCALE keyframes within an effect and change their size “relative” to their current size. Or I might want to move just those keyframes a few frames later in time.
Anyway, I can do this easily in other NLE’s I’ve used, but so far can’t find a way to do this in FCP.
Any FCP effect experts out there?
Many thanks . .

October 27, 2005 at 2:51 pmAlas, there is no way to do this in FCP. I wish we could. Feature request for next version please.

October 27, 2005 at 3:05 pmI was afraid you were going to say that. Being new to FCP, this limitation makes doing even simple EFX work a real pain in the butt!
Thanks.

October 27, 2005 at 3:53 pmI agree that this lack of feature makes it somewhat cumbersome when you need to move a group of keyframes. But you can make some very complex effects inside FCP. It is a very powerful effects NLE – not After Effects powerful but much better than other NLE.
I would say learn to use the next keyframe and previous keyframe shortcut (shft-K, option-K) in conjucture with typing in the parameter value number.
It takes a little bit to get use to but once you are, it’s very flexible.

Thanks, but that doesn’t address the problem. I don’t need to copy keyframes to another clip, I need to change two or more keyframes globally in an absolute or relative amount – either in time space or in relation to the attribute values (scale, rotation, hue, etc.) of those particular keyframes.

October 28, 2005 at 12:52 amNot sure this will help, haven’t tried it my self. Check Manual Volume III, Chapter 13, Page 259. It will probably solve part of the problems, but I am sure it wouldn’t be as easy as say After Effects. Hope this helps.

October 28, 2005 at 1:24 amYou can change where your keyframes are in time by using ‘toggle clip keyframes’ in the bottom left of the timeline.
I find this useful when I want to move scale & centre without dragging them individually.

October 28, 2005 at 4:13 amAnd (another little secret in my book and seminar), if you drag between keyframes on the motion bar in clip keyframes, you can slip them to a new position. There’s a little technique you can use to hide all keyframes, then go back to move just the ones you want to align. This is helpful for making adjustments for individual parameters along multiple tracks.
Suggest anyone interested in FX to please look into taking my upcoming seminar. There’s much to learn about creating FX in FCP and it’s mostly about workflow and technique.

October 29, 2005 at 1:02 amThanks for all your suggestions. The “toggle clip keyframes” helped a bit. I’m just a little surprised that after all this time on the market, especially with the number of editors using FCP – what I would consider basic “global” effects keyframe handling is completely absent. The kind of effects I’m doing for this particular show are pretty basic, but being able to finesse even simple effects seemlessly is the mark of a well designed effects engine.
I agree that I can send the secion back and forth to After Effects, etc., but this is really basic stuff.
One more question though:
Is there anyway to turn the “auto-keyframe” function? (where FCP adds a keyframe to an effect if it detects any change to the selected parameter). It can be really annoying when you don’t need it!
All the best,
Michael Buday
