Isn’t anybody outraged!
Posted by Erik Mickelson on November 4, 2005 at 4:31 pmI mean, c’mon buy a new G5 and then shell out another $700 to upgrade FCP Studio? All of my other software can use the new graphics cards just fine. What is the big deal with Apples sofware? What makes it so special that a user “must” upgrade to use the new G5? Are Lightwave and After Effects so superior in their use of graphics cards? I think not! I am insensed buy this low level tactic to get more cash.

What exactly are you talking about? FCP Studio is running on two Dual 2.0’s here for about 4 months now. You don’t need a new G5 to run studio.

Motion is the only app that’s really affected by the graphics card. If you don’t want to purchase the new G5, don’t.

November 4, 2005 at 4:56 pmWhat he is saying is:
If you want to buy the new G5, you must upgrade to FCP 5.Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD and earlier cannot be installed on Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) or iMac G5 (iSight)
Final Cut Pro 4 through Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 require a computer with an AGP video card for installation. PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) models (released October 19, 2005) and iMac G5 (iSight) models feature newer PCI Express video cards. Because of this, you can’t install Final Cut Pro 4.x on these computers.Final Cut Pro 3.x and earlier do not work in Max OS X 10.4 Tiger. Because Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) and iMac G5 (iSight) models require Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later, you can’t install Final Cut Pro 3.x or earlier versions on these computers.
To use Final Cut Pro on Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) or iMac G5 (iSight) computers, please upgrade to Final Cut Pro 5.

November 4, 2005 at 4:59 pmApple steered me wrong. On Apples own admition, the new G5 will not work with previous versions of FCP(4, 4.5, 4.5 HD) only FCP 5! The reason Apple give is that the “old” FCP does not support the “new” graphics cards! In contrast, AE 6.5 and Lightwave do support the new hardware. How can Apple with a clear conscience do this?

November 4, 2005 at 5:09 pmI think what he’s talking about is how he can’t run FCP 4.5 on the new PCIe G5’s:

This is how I look at it, and no I am not outraged. First of all, Apple is business to make money. Business, unfortunately, breeds competition inherently. Apple needs to stay competitive with other computer and hardware manufacturers if they want to keep selling computers and have people like us buy them. In some ways they keep us in check with Final Cut Pro where they ‘force’ you to upgrade to studio due to current graphics card architectures. In order for progress, you must take some steps, and I think that’s what Apple is doing. There are so many rants on this and other forums about FCPs ‘real time’ ability especially with uncompressed HD and color correcting. Apple is moving towards making the editing process faster and more powerful with the current architecture upgrades. Any other NLE or compositing applications, you have to buy into their hardware scheme as well, usually along with a yearly tech support fee as well. Apple has this kind of thing going with us, except we need to buy their latest hardware to stay current, at a fraction of the price of other NLE’s (remember you have to buy a computer with those too on top whatever charges for proprietary hardware) and there’s no support contract to deal with either. We also have the privilege of using the latest greatest technology, while other NLE’s require you to stay on certain “qualified systems” and os versions. If you want to stay current (and no one says you have to) you have to buy in to Apple’s way of doing business. They are moving forward and progressing, it costs money for them to do this, which is why they charge us for their computers and don’t give them away for free. You can choose to not buy in to this way of business, but they are doing the same thing as many many other NLE companies are doing. Apple’s way is still cheaper. Call a resaler and ask for a demo on other NLE apps and configurations, you’ll find out for yourself real quick.

November 4, 2005 at 5:22 pmThanks for the clarification Jeremy and well said points.
I agree, I’m not outraged at all. If you’re working professionally, this really should not be a big deal. Get a new machine and new software to go with it. I own two copies of FCP Studio here and though FCP 5 is buggier than I’d like, there are marked improvements in the video processing which if you’re working professionally are almost a must.
There are so many NLE’s out there to work with, if you’re not happy with Apple’s marketing strategy, then move on and be happy with something else.

November 4, 2005 at 5:24 pmCompletely missing my point!
The point is, only Apple software needs to be upgraded to run on the new G5 machines. We are being gouged. Adobe, Newtek, Maya- all of their software runs fine with no modification to the application. Other NLE manufactures software will run on old crusty machines, or conversely, new shiny machines. Of course the new shiny machines run much better- that is expected. Anyone remembe the Dane Hack for FCP 3? A person found out that Apple had put in a software limiter in the code for “real time “FCP. By exploiting that code real ime performance was acheived on unqualified systems. What happened- Apple threatened the guy with jail time for doing this. What if Chevy, or Honda threatened all these hot rodders that modify their cars? It is just that the broken promises and elitism are beginning do drag me down. This is a huge slap in the face for an Apple poster boy. I am beginning to see through the thin veil of market exploitation by way of producing slick looking software that runs like cr*p. This is all a shell game.

This will not be the case in a few more months, I suspect. All of the new revs will be tweaked to take advantage of the new architecture offered by Tiger/G5/advanced GPUs.
Your example is not entirely accurate. The history of proprietary systems is paved with stories of new releases that totally obsolete all previous systems; Media 100 comes to mind. Recall when Macintosh moved from Nubus to PCI.
You stay current if your profession demands it, cost of doing business. If you do not need to update, you can save your money. Indeed, FCP5 is NOT worth the upgrade price unless you absolutely require its dubious features.
We’re all going to be in the same boat soon. The new Intel Macintosh will make all of us dinosaurs within a few years.

November 4, 2005 at 5:42 pmFCP 3 does indeed work with OS 10.4 Tiger. I use it along with FCP 5 on the same G5.

November 4, 2005 at 6:04 pmHi,
Nobody is forcing you to buy the latest PCIe powermac. Just buy a previous model Dual G5 (at a discounted price) if you don’t want to upgrade to Studio.
Best Wishes,
Mitch
