Erik – I’m sorry for your frustration buddy. You shouldn’t let these things bother you that much. You should be happy that Apple has given you an opportunity at a career. You have to either accept the way they do business or look elsewhere. Also, there are still ‘older g5’s” available brand new from the apple store and elsewhere. Click on the “need pci-x?” link in the apple store and look at places like cdw or macmall to have stock of “older” g5s, which in my opinion are still kick ass computers. My dual 2.0 hums right along.

That hack you speak of probably broke some sort of user license agreement, every software vendor makes you sign one when you click agree. You do read those don’t you? If someone hacked into After Effects and posted all over the internet I’m sure there’d be more than a few lawyers called. To use your analogy, heavily modifying a brand new Chevy or Honda I’m sure violates the warranty. It’s corporations man, it’s how they work, how they operate, how they make money, and also how they protect their investments. To really step out of reality, if Apple (or anyone) sold the future proof computer, they’d soon be out of business as everyone would have exactly what they needed for the rest of their born days. SOunds silly, right? Although, I’d love for that to happen, you know it’s not. that’s like saying you are going to charge your clients for one video that you make and the rest are f-r-e-e. Progress ain’t cheap.

Apple is in a unique position as they write the operating system that controls their other software/hardware, unlike Adobe or Maya, or whoever which writes software to plug into the mac or pc architecture and operating systems. You better believe that if Maya or Adboe started writing the operating system, certain functions would not be available unless you upgraded to AE version 7.

So, on this beautiful Friday (at least here in Chicago), take a breath, send back the dual core, get yourself a dual processor 2.7, take a drink, do yoga, decompress, or simply pay the $700 to be up to date.

I accept your challenge. I will try to find a DP 2.7! Wow, such soothing words you have Jeremy. Are you a Yogi? Most people take offense at my remarks because they are so crass and usually unfounded. Your words have changed the course of my life and I am now indebted to you. I will send you the first of my litter of crows. You will know that the crow has been delivered when you hear the “caw!caw!” outside your window while you are trying to ADR. I am calm now. I guess paying $700 for FCP Studio is better than having my car burned in France.

That is not really his argument. His point is, buying the quad G5 should not mean you have to purchase a new software. I think he wants Apple to add a FCP patch to support PCIe video cards. IMO, it is a valid request.

    Guys

I may have started a fuss about this and your points are all well taken.

Unfortunately your perspective is a bit narrow to include some users situations.

In our case we are an educational institution and work off of Purchase Orders. We had actuall y ordered one of the “older’ G5”s. But because PO processing take 4-6 weeks by the time Apple received oour order the new G5 was announced.

Apple called us and said “YOU MUST BUY ONE OF THE NEW G5’S BECAUSE THE “OLDER VERSION IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE FROM US”

So I did not have the choice you’re talking about unless I pull my Purchase Order and wait another 6-8 weeks and find a vendor that the school will approve and then buy an ‘old” G5 from them.

On top of that – because we use 6 G5’s to train students its essential that all the software and configurations on those machines is very close to the same if not exactly the same.

Which means oh by the way I NEED TO BUY 6 COPIES OF THE VERSION 5.0.

so adding one computer just cost the school and $2400!

That blows – sorry about professionals who are in the business etc but not everyone is in the same position

[Erik] “Apple steered me wrong. On Apples own admition, the new G5 will not work with previous versions of FCP(4, 4.5, 4.5 HD) only FCP 5! The reason Apple give is that the “old” FCP does not support the “new” graphics cards! In contrast, AE 6.5 and Lightwave do support the new hardware. How can Apple with a clear conscience do this?”

With Core Image, it probably uses the video card in a different way than AE and Lightwave. Apple probably doesn’t want to take a step backwards and write new drivers for older, less capable video cards. It could also be a way to guarantee a certain level of performance.

    Time marches on.

I read where to support the legacy Motorola CPU’s and the new Intel CPU’s Apple would have to detect the hardware of the machine and install the correct FCP code for the CPU hardware and chipset.

If they can’t do it for PCI-X versus PCIe, I hope I am not seeing a slow motion train wreck in process. Does the left hand software development not know what the right hand hardware development is doing? If they do, then they fed the conspiracy theorist on this one.

    Can we say “compile”?,
    Feeling a froth coming on,

    Don’t worry Mr. B. I have a cunning plan…

I am more annoyed by the post. From my perspective, only a few years ago you would have paid well over $100,000 for what we can get today for a few thousand.

Actually I am grateful to Apple for even offering a top flight NLE for $999 and a suite of apps for $1299. If they wanted to gouge us they could have easily charged $5-$10,000. In reality, Apple has SAVED all of us thousands of dollars. Just hop over to Avid and see how much they charge! Shake is much cheaper now.

Is it me or is it not incredible that we can purchase a quad-processor, 4 gigs of ram, and an awesome video suite for $5500???

    Props to you, Apple.
