As i’m from Europe, i have a different angle.
We DO NOT use color in our subtitles, we use white letters with a little outline and shadow.

As for Digital Heaven, it can’t do that as far as i know.
But my subtitle prep tool comes with a (free!) FCP text generator that does this (and is controllable by XML if you like)

There are other ways, but still no exactly capturing one stream.
I’ve made an application that you can use to ‘switch’, either use the keyboard or listen to the tally lights of an external switcher.
You have to capture all your cams as iso. The output of my software is either an EDL to link to, or via optional software from Andreas Kiel, directly to multicam XML.
So not only have you instant result, you can ‘undo’ every cut you made.

There is an external application, that works with FCP quite nice over XML. (But also with EDL to other apps)

You can batch capture imported clips!
Do a small test, import a QT, edit a simple sequence, delete the media from the master clip, select it, select ‘batch import’ from the menu, import.
If you need, select your sequence and choose ‘relink’.
Should work like a charm, and smaller files make multicam a little snappier.

Depends on the format you have them now.
If they are in a text generator inside the FCP timeline, use a tool from Spherico:

If they are in another format, perhaps my subtitler can convert them for you.

Also handy if you have them in text format, as it can import text quite fast. (Either import a complete file, or have it import selections while running in the background)

If you want to be cheap and have them in a text format, check the DVD SP manual on how to correctly format them. It aint rocket science, but you’re in for a treat if you have to do minor changes in DVD SP.

If you can get your cameras TC locked, that’s a start.
But, if you can shoot time of the day, it’s easier to sync with the sound tracks.

There are many computer based recording solutions, and even dirt cheap ones. But, how to sync them?

Easiest way to do so is having indeed a clap in the image, and DO NOT STOP recording the entire session. Once you’ve matched the clap with one of the cameras, you can set the TC (or AUX TC) of your audio channels to the actual TOD, and you’re fine from there on.

Another thing to concider is my ‘FCP AUX TC’ solution, downloadable from my website.
But even with that, you need a TC source that will be fed to all recording devices.

You then have the benefit of having instant subs in all kind of formats.

Back to basics, but Avid is a beast with a mind of its own.
You either obay the Avid way, or expect to smash a lot of keyboards…

It does not matter if it is needed or not, it may just work fine now.

BUT

There WILL be a change in software someday, and one of the two will stop working after a certain upgrade.
So, be sane, keep the dual boot.
