I use a 2405FPW for Kona 2 and Kona 3 outputs all the time – specifically with the K2 or K3 box analog Y Pb Pr outputs. It works just fine – for both SD and HD (but SD looks like crap).

I have never seen Maxtor SATA drives. I have used both the Seagate and Hitachi SATA drives, and both are excellent.

Basic question, but it needs to be asked. You are trying to monitor audio using the K-Box RCA outputs — and not the XLRs, correct? The XLR connections are digital, not analog.

Walter is absolutely correct. You have this fantasy that analog HD has all this noise in it, and that firewire is the only way to go (via the Convergent Design or Miranda). Price or no price, for all my BROADCAST INSTALLATIONS that require HDV, I use the Sony HVRM-25U, and feed this into a HD10A (I have not used the AVA yet), and go into either an AVID Adrenaline HD, and AVID Nitris, or an AJA Kona 3. I have never had one broadcast customer complain even a little, from the HD10A HD-SDI signal feeding an AVID Adrenaline HD.

This applies to analog audio products as well. With a S/N ratio of -95dB, no one can tell the difference between a hi end analog audio product, and a digital audio product – especially one with poor sampling, and poor A/D and D/A converters in it (you have to hear it somehow !).

So John, I am sorry, but I do not know what you are talking about – regardless of the price.

so when you use Firewire for VTR control of the HVRM – should I assume that you are disconnecting your AJA I/O LA from this system ?

my unnecessary attitude expresses my frustration towards my clients and your clients, as you have described in your post –

Customers these days often feel “lets get a $100,000 VTR, but I ain’t hiring NO ONE to install it” – or – Let’s get an AVID Nitris, but I ain’t paying Mike to edit – he is too expensive – let’s get this kid to edit, who will charge us $75 per day”.

I put a lot of effort out to show my clients how wonderful the AJA Kona 3 is, and how wonderful the Panasonic DVCProHD VTRs are – and how much they can save by buying these products – but they STILL HAVE TO HIRE ME, and they STILL HAVE TO HIRE YOU TO EDIT ! These products can cost 10 bucks, or 10 million bucks, but you STILL HAVE TO PAY FOR A QUALIFIED EDITOR. These days, may clients feel that they can get ANYONE to edit – and they don’t need you Mike – they can get some kid.

Sorry – but this makes me upset, and is the basis for my frustration in these posts. You pointed it out very well – they got a D5 machine – it costs a lot of money – how come they need someone qualified to make it work, and what the hell are all these little boxes !!!!
I know that in many of the posts on these forums, there is this poor kid, who just wants to keep his first job, and the rich company that hired him has basically said to him “you get this to work, or you are fired” – and he is scrambling to make his FCP system work – with no support or additional equipment from anyone.
