  • Help! No analog audio from K3 breakout box

    Hi, all,

We’ve had a Kona 3 for a couple of months with FCP 5.0 in a Quad. Finally got the breakout box today. But we can’t get any audio out of the analog monitor outputs. Since we haven’t hooked up a deck to the digital outs yet either (we’re going to be renting for the time being), we aren’t sure any audio is coming out of the card at all. That’s disturbing.

I prefer to think I’m just missing a setting somewhere. But I’ve made sure of the settings in FCP, have removed and reseated the Kona 3 card itself, made sure all the cables are well seated and attached. Nothing. Plays OK through the computer when FCP’s audio playback is set to built-in audio.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Mike

Have you checked the audio settings in the Kona Control Panel?

    Hi, Harley,

Yes, I’ve been trying to find additional settings that I may have missed. The only one I seem to find is a setting with which you choose which channels to monitor. I can’t find a reference to that in the manual, but to check it I tried each different setting — channels 1&2, then 3&4, etc. None of the settings helped. I can’t find any other settings, and see nothing in the manual other than a couple of references that basically say “if you have the breakout box you can monitor the audio via the analog out.” It seems to me that the FCP settings are critical, and I’ve tried every configuration I can think of with them to be sure I’m sending the sound to the Kona 3, using easy setup, etc. Still nothing.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Not in front of my system (Kona 2) right now… the only other thing I can think of off hand is to reverse the cables end for end from the Kona card to the K-Box. I seem to remember this was a fix for this problem with the Kona 2 and K-Box. Obviously, you’ll have to power down your system and as well as anything plugged into it.

Another thing… how are you monitoring the RCA analog channels? Make sure you’re connected to an appropriate input on your mixer, deck, or whatever and that the audio signal path is routed to the speakers/headphones.

Put Bars and Tone on a timeline and play it.

Basic question, but it needs to be asked. You are trying to monitor audio using the K-Box RCA outputs — and not the XLRs, correct? The XLR connections are digital, not analog.

this is the perfect question – we await an answer –

The question about the xlr vs the rca jacks — digital vs. analog — was actually answered in my first post. However, I have to say that it is not beyond me to make that kind of mistake, so I appreciate the effort to eliminate the obvious issues first. That just wasn’t the case this time.

The solution turned out to be Harley’s suggestion: Switch ends on the cable from the K-Box to the Kona 3 card. Seemed an unexpected solution, given that the cable isn’t marked as to which end goes to which unit, but it solved it. Everything works now, and sound is actually coming out of those funny little red and white round things on the lower right hand side of the box. Now, perhaps if I plug these odd, pointy-looking cables into them I can make it louder.

Many thanks for your concern and help,

    Mike
