Have a look at http://www.barefeats.com for their own analysis of OWC RAM and what you should do with your Apple RAM – you’d need a couple more 1Gb sticks if you wanted to leave it in, although I know that’s not what you’re suggesting.
As far as worries about fitting OWC RAM, it’s not a real big concern. Apple only give a spec for RAM that can be installed, and the OWC RAM meets it – in fact as barefeats point out, the cooling fins are actually BETTER on the OWC RAM. So you’re covered as far as problems go. Memory rarely fails, and a quick search here will show you that OWC is pretty well considered for pro work. So sell or keep your Apple RAM – I’d keep it ‘cos it sure ain’t worth much these days…

Really nice Pete. As you say in the video, doing wipes like this with keyframes is a pain in FCP – especially when you want to alter the durations. It’s clear you put a lot of thought into the flexibility – I can see the wipe-ons for text being very useful.
I didn’t gather – can you alter the opacity of the elements (eg. so you can fade on or off the wipe element in the limited text wipes in video 3?) I assume you can’t keyframe within a transition? Of course, you could overcome this by using a movie element to wipe with I suppose – that’s the flexibility…
Got a lovely corporate coming that definitely gets the full supawipe treatment….

Yup – sounds like the wrong video playback settings. Try an Easy Setup to cure it.
Do you see an output on your video monitor on normal playback? Is there video going to the tape machine if you just hit play on the timeline? If not it’s the playback settings. If so, you have a deck control issue possibly – although I think that’s unlikely.
Give us more details about your project settings (codec etc) and the inputs your using to the deck. That may clear things up.

I think Bret means do what Walter suggested (ie. duplicate the original video on the next video level up – without the chromakey filter) but instead of applying the garbage matte, just crop the video down so it only includes a square around the eyes.
You can find the crop sliders under the ‘motion’ tab on the clip. You should probably use the feather option there to smooth the edges and avoid any nasty lines.
To be honest, the renders will be pretty quick with either method. The garbage matte is a better solution if you need to finesse the eye area more than just using a simple box.

Not that I’d recommend doing it on my tower systems, I upgraded to Leopard on my MBP after installing FCS2 (I only use the system at home and to evaluate). I just couldn’t be bothered to do a clean install on a non-critical computer.
I’ve had no problems at all.

You can jump around the windows by pressing Apple+1 or +2 or +3 etc.
The default for the viewer is Apple+1.
Is that what you mean? The shortcuts are listed right next to the window names under the ‘window’ drop-down at the top.
Hope that helps – sometimes the answers are right under your nose!

FCP rarely. Motion 3 quite often. DVDSP never.

PS – I often run Motion on my MacBook Pro, which may explain some of the crashes… (2Gb RAM and worse gfx card)

The G-Sata comes with a SATA card for use with your Mac Pro. Used with SATA it is significantly quicker than a firewire array, although that speed will fall using RAID 1, as will your capacity (it will obviously halve). The speed will still be sufficient for DV (which I think was the point, wasn’t it?).
Couple of points:
1) The G-Sata only comes in capacities up to 1Tb (don’t know why) and that’s a RAID 0 figure. For RAID 1 it will halve to 500Gb – which may not be big enough for you.
2) G-SATA ships with a SATA card that doesn’t support Leopard at this time. Don’t know if that matters to you.
3) If you want 1Tb of RAID 1, you would need to go to the G-Speed ES – which is an excellent product supporting hotswap drives, and supporting RAID5 – a better compromise of speed and safety. There are other well recommended solutions from Caldigital and others of a similar nature – which I have not used, but others recommend.
4) If you only need storage for a Mac Pro, put some internal 500Gb drives in for a cheap and very fast solution. We use 3x500Gb drives in one of our systems for Uncompressed SD, and I don’t even bother mirroring – It’s very reliable being internal. Great not to have to carry an external array when I take the system somewhere. Don’t know how this suits. Both the G-products will be useable with a laptop for mobile work.
Just a little more for you to mull over.

Can I say that I don’t work for G-Tech, but if you want a raid 1 solution the G-Sata will do that as well as giving you a much faster drive that will work on a Mac Pro or Macbook pro.
However, all these comments about Raid 1 in a single chassis are valid. Still, if you’re on the road and one fails I suppose it could help. But I’ve never had a G-raid fail….
