Actually what I do is do the key first, don’t worry about the eyes.
Then duplicate that onto the video layer directly above the original. Remove the Key from that layer. Now apply a Garbage Matte to the duplicated video and just mask the eyes back in. Be sure to put a nice soft feather on the matte so you don’t see it.
So you have the original video layer being keyed and the 2nd layer putting the eyes back into place.

January 27, 2008 at 5:05 pmDepending on the angle of the head, cropping may work as well. It’s quicker and easier to adjust and apply, and renders faster and/or plays back in real time easier.

January 28, 2008 at 3:07 amI think Bret means do what Walter suggested (ie. duplicate the original video on the next video level up – without the chromakey filter) but instead of applying the garbage matte, just crop the video down so it only includes a square around the eyes.
You can find the crop sliders under the ‘motion’ tab on the clip. You should probably use the feather option there to smooth the edges and avoid any nasty lines.
To be honest, the renders will be pretty quick with either method. The garbage matte is a better solution if you need to finesse the eye area more than just using a simple box.
