Sony Levels is the filter you need to use for each event. Get up the Vector Scopes and use the waveform monitor. you should have stuff touching 100 (black) and 0 (white). Google for ‘sony vegas scope levels’.

    John,

Thanks for that. I was getting the feeling it was a tape format. I am going to see if they will accept HDV 1080 50i as that is what it is shot in.

That hardrive will easily handle the throughput unless it is VERY badly fragmented or there is some type of HW problem. Are you using the same firewire card for the camera and the drive? In the old avid days we used to use a 2nd (could be any cheap) card for drive as capturing on a firewire card that was also connected to a drive was a problem but this was a long time ago.

Reeboot, Defrag the drive and try again.

A reliable one;). But seriously I would avoid Lecie like the plague. Everyone I know who has had problems with external hard drives it has almost always been a Lacie.

I would go for eSATA father than USB as it is like having an internal one in terms of performance and get 7200 spin speed one (as already mentioned).

I would also consider some type of RAID or drobo or array. They work in sets of 4 or more drives and if a single one goes down you wont loose anything. Having a hard drive crash near the end of a edit is a great way to loose clients.

In terms of the make of drive any well known brand (apart from Lacie) should do.

February 3, 2011 at 3:21 pm in reply to: Why did BBC choose Premier Pro over Sony Vegas?

God point but but I suspect this is more of a hardware than software thing. Going from one OS to another is relatively trivial compared to changing the edit system. Also the hardware thing is a little short sighted because at sometime they will upgrade and PCs are a lot cheaper than mac. However I guess they still want to run both systems at least for a period and this may be the curx of the matter. In terms of support licensing as long as it is done in an organised way and planed ahead they would simply be moving from one support vendor to another.

I wonder if Sony are thinking of porting Vegas, I believe Abode did this recently with Premier and it seems to of paid off.

Getting there;). That saves 1 keystroke but still not quite as streamlines.

February 3, 2011 at 9:39 am in reply to: Using a few HDV clips in a DV project

Thanks everyone for the help. I ended up just capturing it and putting it on lime line to see what happened. Surprisingly it actually played with out rendering which is great (although it has a green line so obviously need rendering before before outputting).

I even put a levels filter on and increased gamma and that played without rendering. Strange thing is when I put a saturation filter on it then needed rendering. I then did the same to a DV clip and it also played without rendering for levels but needed rendering for saturation.

Kind of odd. When I used Avid DV express 10 years ago it seemed to be able to do most things in realtime. I would of thought FCP would of caught up by now. I also use Sony Vegas which does everything in realtime, however it does need a lot of CPU. Avid seemed to be able to do this on a single 1Ghz core (for DV)!.

January 31, 2011 at 11:49 am in reply to: Anyone tried running Vegas on Mac Hardware?

Aparently the graphics card was upgraded in the Mac Pro as well as the CPU. Win7 Seems to like it and do the stupid application switching where they are stacked into the distance. Really need to find out how to switch this annoyance off;).

And yes, Vegas does do things its own way. In my opinion this is one of its strength. Rather than copying all the other apps. A lot of the conventions in FCP come from Avid. As a result they are very keyboard constrained. We have a windows interface, lets maximise it for productivity. I understand that keyboard shortcrust are great but sometimes the mouse is the way to go. Examples of this are time stretch and fade handles. The fade handels are a LOT less fiddely than FCP.

My route has been Avid, FCP, Avid, Vegas (and now FCP & Vegas). Ive kind of seen it all. At first I found Vegas very hard work as it did not conform to the Avid/FCP conventions but when I spent more time with it I begun to understand why.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.

I ended up getting a Mac Pro 2*Dual (i.e. Quad) Core 3Ghz. Hopefully this will be OK for HD. It is a very similar spec to my Windows PC except the mac has a much better graphics card.

It turned out to be a late 2.66Ghz which had its CPU upgraded. I managed to install Win7 Pro 64bit. When I tried to run the main bootcamp install it said 64bit was not supported on my machine. I got round this by installing the drivers separately and I now have everything working. Not sure why bootcamp complained, very odd.

Done a few days FCP and it nice to have sequences, I know you don’t need them but they are very useful. I also like the Trim Edit (never quite got the Vegas keyboard trimming working).

FCP seems very fidelity. I really miss the ‘Vegas Play and return to cursor’ spacebar functionality, is there an equivalent in FCP? All I can find in FCP is play/pause.
