Thanks everybody for your replies.
I come from a Sony Vegas background and am trying to find the best way to migrate my working practices.
In FCP is there a ‘play and return’ as well as a ‘play/pause’. In Vegas the return key allows you to ‘play/pause’ in the same way as FCP does with spacebar. The space bar actually has a ‘play and return’ functionality. This plays from the cursor when spacebar is pressed and when spacebar is pressed again returns to the cursor. This allows a in (or out) point to be found easily. The left/right arrows are used to nudge to the frame and spacebar plays from the cursor. This is done until the place is found.

Thanks for everyone’s replies.
In terms of using the timeline are there keyboard short cuts to play a loop round the cursor and are there keyboard shortcuts to move edit point left/right 1 or 5 frames? Te later is also a question concerning Trim Edit, there do not seem to be keyboard shortcuts for the +/-1 and +/- 5 buttons.

Yes, is this the best way to do fine trimming?

John,
Yes, that was my first thought. Maybe I should delete the temp file each nested project creates. Not sure if it is relevant but I have just upgraded from v9 to v10. I opened up all the project files and saved them to convert to v10. The nested project opens in v10 on old install but I do get an error saying some streams may be missing (or words to that effect). Its the new install I am having problems with.

John,
I think being able to create EDLs to transfer to other systems like Avid and FCP. I believe it is possible to move between FCP and Avid. I think the collaboration tools may be more of an issue. I am no workflow but it seems FCP/Avid are a lot better at this.
I know there is a lot of politics around using Vegas feature films but is this the only reason. I have noticed that as the amount of footage increased things do slow down a lot. Not sure how long it would take to load a project with 30-100 hours footage.
I am not sure when 3D will hit the indy market. Personally I am interested in documentary so it is a long way off.
Vegas not being ideal for large collaborative projects was something I have herd several times.
Personaly the only thing I find lacking is the title tool. I remember it being a breeze to do rolling credits with fetherd edges in FCP 5 years ago. I found Vegas verry fidely and did not find a strightforward way or fethering credit roll.

This is probably a better subject, previous one was a little reactionary;).

Thanks everybody,
I ended up using a ‘Calumet Telescopic Zipdisc Holder’ (https://www.calumetphoto.com/eng/product/calumet_telescopic_zipdisc_holder/mf6860) I already had and used a Flag made of corrugated cardboard.
For a disc reflector holder it is a bit fiddly as it uses 2 bulldog clips but this makes it ideal for a flag holder.
It also can be used as a boom for a light stand as it has a light mounting on the end.
Very versatile bit of kit and only $35!
