Keep in mind you can achieve the same results in post using the Apple Frame Rate Converter utility. But you can only see the slow/fast motion effect in-camera from the cards.

DV is an interlaced format; if you’re just dubbing down to DV then yes it’ll be interlaced — each 720/50p frame will be sent to a 576/50i field.
If you dub 720/25pN footage to DV tape, you should be able to import that as a 25P project (not 50i) and treat each pair of fields as a progressive-scan frame; that should preserve the motion without interlacing.

Almost every DV device will work just fine for that. The only exception I can think of is an early JVC VHS/DV deck which for some reason stripped out the 24p flags upon importing the footage. Other than that, any DV device should work for 24p capture.

Yes you can do that. Only con is that burning DL DVDs isn’t the fastest procedure.

Why wouldn’t it import? If you’re importing to FCP 5.0.4 or 5.1, it should go straight in…

Does the clip play in the camera from the card?
If so, and FCP won’t import it, the next question to ask is: are you using FCP 5.0.4 or 5.1?

You have to “select” the clips before you can repair them. Put the thumbnail cursor on the clip in question, and press the “pause/set” button (the middle button of the navigation buttons). It’ll draw a thin blue outline around the thumbnail, meaning that that clip is now “selected”. Now try the “repair clip” function, it should work.

If you have the tapes, and can play them back in a DVX, you can press the “counter” button until it displays “FR” (for “frame rate”); it’ll tell you there whether the clip currently playing is 24p or 24pA.

In the SDX, that setting is equivalent to the “THICK/THIN” setting in a DVX.
But the HVX, DVX, and SDX all use genuine progressive-scan imaging for their 24p and 30p modes (and, in the HVX, for all frame rates in its 720p mode).
Think of it like this: in 1080 (or on the SDX & DVX, in 480) it’s genuine progressive footage, being carried in an interlaced bucket. The CODEC is interlaced. The footage is imaged truly progressively. But the codec expects 59.94 fields per second. So the camera slices each progressive frame into fields and divvies them out in a way that the codec can handle it. In post you can un-do that process and end up with exactly what you started: genuine progressive-scan imagery.
