Just press the “shutter” button inside the LCD panel. It’ll toggle between letting you use custom shutter speeds, or “shutter off” mode (which doesn’t truly turn the shutter off, instead it sets the shutter to a default speed.)

Huh? There’s definitely timecode in the firewire output… FCP may not recognize it for some reason, but it’s there, you can sync two HVXs through the timecode output, you can dub footage from one HVX to another and clone the timecode, etc.

It cannot, so if you’re in 720/30pN or 720/24pN the FireStore will not work. You have to choose the “Over 60” modes, so 720/24p, 720/30p or 720/60p.

You said FCP5.0.
HD clips from P2 only works in 5.0.4 or later.
Make sure you are running at least 5.0.4 or it won’t work.

The 24p frames get imbedded in the 60i data stream the same way film gets transferred to video; by using 2:3 pulldown (or, in the 24pA mode, 2:3:3:2 pulldown). If the pulldown is removed, you’re left with an 80mbps data stream of 24p footage.

There will likely never be a cheap USB reader; there are reasons Panasonic’s reader costs $2500.
The cheapest USB reader that actually works is the P2 Store — it’s a 60GB hard disk offloading system but it can also serve as a direct pass-thru slot.
http://www.duel-systems.com is slated to introduce an Expresscard->PCMCIA adapter board that will do exactly what we want; don’t know an exact date but it should be within the next month or two.

If you want to keep your current hardware, and you want to use every format the HVX200 shoots, and you want the ultimate in P2 integration, download the demo copy of Canopus EDIUS Broadcast. It’s a PC application, and its P2 integration is unparalleled — way better than FCP and Avid’s. The editor itself isn’t quite as robust as FCP or Avid, but its P2 support is phenomenal, and if it does everything you need then you may find it an appealing alternative.

Correct, but S-video or Composite are the only signals that work when using firewire input in HD.

While this is true, there’s another little tidbit one would want to keep in mind: do NOT use a drive that’s being used for any other purpose, because the HVX will format it and delete everything that’s on that drive!
Only use a drive that you can dedicate solely to offloading from the HVX.
If you choose to use your ipod for offloading, understand that the HVX will format its drive, and your ipod will no longer function as an ipod.
