You don’t get that with 1/12. You get that by setting the camera in two frames per second mode, with a 350-degree shutter. That delivers a 1/2-second exposure, and that gets you great streaks like these:

I’ve heard others report that same thing. Don’t know why it would be true, but apparently it is.
Apple doesn’t recommend doing a copy like that anyway. They’ve updated their workflow recommendations, they now recommend making a disk image of the P2 card.

1080/50i and 1080/25p have exactly the same data rate, 100 megabits.
The FireStore records every mode: DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO-HD, in every frame rate. The bitrate of 1080 footage is always 100 megabits. The bitrate of 720 footage, when recorded out the firewire port, is always 100 megabits.
The only thing the FireStore can’t record is the 720pN mode, and that’s because no video data is sent out the firewire port when in the 720pN mode.

Yes, there’s no AVC control back to the camera when in P2 mode. Tape mode, yes, P2 mode, no.

I believe HD Log from Imagine Products will allow converting the 720/25 and 720/50 files into formats that FCP can edit natively.

The longest exposure you can get under normal circumstances is 1/12th or 1/15th.
If you use the frame rate trick and set the camera in 2fps mode, and set the shutter to 350 degrees, then you’ll get exposure times of 1/2 second, which are much more likely to create streaks.

Yes, because on the big cameras “shutter off” usually means exactly that: NO shutter. So 100% exposure.
The DVX and HVX don’t operate that way; even though the terminology says “shutter off”, what it really does is “custom shutter speed off”.
You can get 1/24 or 1/30 if you want, which would give you the same effect as the 2/3″ camera’s “shutter off” mode, but you have to go about it by selecting those speeds, not through just selecting “shutter off”.

No, it’ll set it at the “default” shutter speed, which is I believe 1/50th for 24p and 1/60th for 30p.

There are no settings. Timecode is always there. FCP may not choose to recognize it, but it’s there. Avid and Canopus and DVC Rack see it, it’s an inherent part of the video stream. Try setting the camera in free run timecode, you should see it at all times.
