  • Shutter Speed for 30p

Posted by Lars Wikstrom on May 31, 2006 at 10:19 pm

A client wants me to shoot in 30p in DS format for their project. The new HVX gives me many options and I just wanted to get some ideas of the proper setting.

When shooting 30p should I have my shutter speed at 30 or 60?

    Thanks,

    -Lars

    Normally 1/60th or “shutter off”.

Shutter off? How does that work?

Just press the “shutter” button inside the LCD panel. It’ll toggle between letting you use custom shutter speeds, or “shutter off” mode (which doesn’t truly turn the shutter off, instead it sets the shutter to a default speed.)

Hi Barry: This brings up a interesting point. On many camcorders, when operating in their 24p or 30p modes, turning the shutter off results in a shutter speed of 1/24-sec. or 1/30-sec. respectively.

Is the HVX200 different in this regard?

    All the best,

    – Peter

Did I understand that right? when the shutter is set to off it is like putting it in a manual mode? so 24p at HD or SD will set the shutter to 24 and 30 for 30p, yes?

No, it’ll set it at the “default” shutter speed, which is I believe 1/50th for 24p and 1/60th for 30p.

Yes, because on the big cameras “shutter off” usually means exactly that: NO shutter. So 100% exposure.

The DVX and HVX don’t operate that way; even though the terminology says “shutter off”, what it really does is “custom shutter speed off”.

You can get 1/24 or 1/30 if you want, which would give you the same effect as the 2/3″ camera’s “shutter off” mode, but you have to go about it by selecting those speeds, not through just selecting “shutter off”.
