  • Using HVX as a firewire device

I looked through the manual but could not find the answer. I got the camera to mount the P2 card and use the P2 import in FCP. But how can I connect the camera to the firewire port and send the video signal out of the computer and into the camera so I can see it on the LCD screen?

My Aurora Pipe Pro card is getting repaired so I would like to use the camera as an interface to the Sony monitor I have. I know I can only use it for SD video and not HD with the SD monitor I have.

Everytime I turn the camera into VTR mode and connect it to my G5 and launch FCP. I get the message poping up that there are no Firewire devices attached to the computer.

    How do I fix this?

    thanks

    Not possible.

Never mind I got it. The camera has to be set to DV and it was set to 720. It really is finiky about the settings. I will read up with regards to the user setting buttons perhaps I can assign some common used settings to the buttons to avoid lots of menu searches.

Thanks for answering all these questions. This camera is more difficult to get use to then a standard DV camera.

I just found out how to do it. Know it plays back from the G5 through the HVX and I only have the RCA composit out right now attached to the TV but it works. I tried the Componant cables since it has the input but the monitor is green.

    Thanks,

    Sorry David, VERY possible.

Connect the camera to the computer via firewire. Turn it on. Launch FCP. Put the camera in VTR mode…you will now be in Thumbnail View. Press the THUMBNAIL button on the top of the camera.

    BOOM…there it is!

It’s definitely not your dad’s dv camera.

Perhaps we are thinking of different things here Shane.

I thought the poster asked if he could send a HiDef firewire video preview out of FCP through the HVX200 to a monitor in HD.

Are you indicating that IS POSSIBLE?

[Shane Ross] “Sorry David, VERY possible”

    This from Barry Green:

“You can use it like a DV-style camera, meaning the FCP timeline will play through firewire and show up on the camera’s LCD.

However, in high-def mode, it does NOT output through the component outputs. When using firewire input, component output isn’t possible. So you can’t use it as a high-def monitoring solution, but you can use it to preview on the camera’s LCD and you can also record that incoming stream (by using the VCR REC buttons on top of the camera by the navigation buttons).”

That’s why Shane I responded as I did. I believed the poster wants to take it through the cam out to a monitor for HD preview.

It’s not possible as I stated.

Hmmm. We did record the timeline onto a P2 card for Barry to show in another part of the booth. But I was also getting timeline playback thru the camera to the HD monitor above me. A DVCPRO HD timeline playing thru the camera, component out to the monitor. I did this about 40 times a day.

HD footage. So…did I do something wrong?

No, it sounds like you did something right.

I’ve never thought it possible to take firewire out to cam, and then component out of the cam to a HD monitor.

Where is Barry when you need him?

Let’s see if we can nail this down.

You can send the HD signal thru firewire to the camera, then from the camera via component to an HD monitor. There is also SVHS, but that isn’t HD.

What sort of signal are they looking the camera to send out?
