[tarkken] “) Can you only play P2 footage that resides on the P2 cards themselves?”
You can play clips on the cards and view them on the lcd screen as well as hd-sdi output or sd downconvert.
[tarkken] “2) Can you play back P2 footage back over firewire”
yes. you can record back to the p2 cards from your editor via firewire or just use the stream for monitoring.[tarkken] “3) Is it compliant with the AVC-Intra codecs coming out?”
No.[tarkken] “4) What’s the price again – somewhere in the low $3K list?”
List is $3995, available in August.HTH,

You should be looking at a “P2 Gear” hpg10
It functions somewhat like a P2 Store, but it allows one to use their own usb drive of any size.
It has other functions, like HD-SDI out for on set monitoring, and a flip up LCD screen.
The problem is that it will not be available until August.

There were 2 interesting announcements from Quantum regarding MXF tape drives.
First, Quantum announced a new LTO drive that is twice as fast (70MB/sec) and greater capacity (400GB) for the same price as the 600A (about $8K list).
They also announced a price reduction on the 600A to $5500 list. You should be able to aquire that for close to $4000.
There have been several improvements to the interface, via free firmware updates.
I also spoke to the Quantum engineers at NAB, amd they seem very interested and dedicated to improving the interface.

What I saw in person from FC6, the answer is no.
I did ask someone from the FC development team, and he said confirmed that there is no native mxf support, and that the metadata is retained, but not used, just like FCP5

[Digistream] “have a basic question, just trying to work out the best option.
What are most guys using to archive from P2? Bearing in mind that in an ideal world I’d go and buy 200 cards, but thats not going to happen! I’m also in the field most of the time, and have LaCies, but eventually this will become difficult too.
Are dual layer DVDs the best option?”
I have been using both Blu-Ray and DLT with my Mac. Both have their places.
The Blu-Ray is cheaper to get into. $800 for a drive, plus $90 or so for Toast8. The discs are between $35 for 25GB write once and $45 bucks for 50GB.
The down side to Blu-Ray is the speed. 90 Minutes to burn a full 46GB load. I have found it necessary to verify each disc, so tack on another few hours.
The Quantum 600A is great. I can write an entire 300GB tape in a little over 2 hours. The cost of entry is higher. I think the Quantum costs about $8,000 list. Tapes are about $100 each.
Hope that helps.

I have used one (beta) for a couple of weeks.
Works well.
They need to jazz it up a little with some graphics 🙂

[TADD Productions] “I am in the process of testing a P2 archive solution with Quantum’s SDLT600A tape drive and Imagine’s HD Log logging software. Anyone out there got any experience with the SDLT600A? Also, does anyone have an idea what the potential demand might be for an MXF-aware video archive solution.”
The demand will grow as P2 card capacities increase and more users adopt the P2 workflow.
If Apple decides to bless us with native MXF support, I believe the potential is much greater.
Just my 2

December 12, 2006 at 4:34 pm in reply to: Spanned P2 Clip Doesnt play on Camera or FCP[EdmondB] “I have footage on a P2 card that I cannot view on the camera nor can I import it. On the camera, I can see the clip in the thumbnail view, but I cannot play it or repair it. When I try to import it into FCP, it says that it is “spanned”. Is there anyway around this? Or is this footage lost?”
Does the clip have an exclamation point on it in the thumbnail view in the camera?
Make sure the card is not write-protected, then select the clip with the pause button, then try to replair clip.
What version of FCP are you running?

The Quantum 600A shows the most promise for building a searchable tape archive from MXF files, since they support that data format natively.
I can say that I have been using bluray in both 25GB and 50GB capacities for a few months now, and it works out well.
See my blog if you are interested in more details about it…

The small movie you send them allows them to transcribe the audio to a text file.
I believe that you will need software like this to make it work…
