Does anyone have experience with closed captioning using an FTP upload and an encoded file inserted into FCP? I need to have my shows CC’d. I was contacted by Aberdeen Captioning and they went through the process with me. They said I upload through their FTP site in a small format (mov or MPG4). They encode and then email the file back for insertion into the FCP. I aksed where on the timeline the file goes and he didn’t have an answer. He said he would call some of his clients and find out, but I thought this way might be faster. If anyone knows the answer, I would appreciate it. Aberdeen’s process would save a boatload of time and shipping costs sending tapes back and forth and if it works out, it’ll be great. Their prices are great and they have a 48 hour turnaround.

The small movie you send them allows them to transcribe the audio to a text file.

I believe that you will need software like this to make it work…

Take the file that Aberdeen gives you and put it at the top layer of the timeline, crop it so just the caption information is showing and then render.
My program is 16:9 letterboxed to 4:3, so I put it on video track one and then put everything else on top of it.

Don is right. The file Aberdeen gives you will be the same length as your entire timeline (plus a little extra at the end possibly). Place it above all other layers of video, sync it with the beginning of your timeline (line up the beginning of Aberdeen’s file with the starting point of the export you gave to them), and crop the bottom of Aberdeen’s video 99%. Then, you’re good to go.

    You may need to render.

Crop? With which tool is best to crop? I don’t mean to sound ignorant, but this is my first experience with CC and I want to make sure it gets done right.

Put the caption movie on the timeline, double click on it and then go to the motion tab in the viewer. Open up the crop triangle and set the bottom crop to 97, that should reveal all the active video but leaving the caption information intact.
