You cannot do this with HDV. You need a capture card, like those made by AJA, Black Magic Design, Matrox or MOTU to play back live to your video monitor.

You’re dropping frames. Typically, this is because your hard drives are too slow to keep up with the data rate of the video you’re trying to capture.
What kind of tape are you trying to capture from? To what type of drive array? Formatted how? How are you connected to the video tape? What codec are you capturing to?

You can drop a slug over the entire sequence & use a garbage matte as your widescreen matte.

I see that too, sometimes. Don’t know why it happens. I didn’t see it with FCP v5 or 6, but I see it with FCP v7.

You can use Automator to add the .mov extension back. It’s actually pretty easy, you need to input your files with “Get Specified Finder Items” or “Get Folder Contents”, then use “Rename Finder Items”. Set the rename to “Add Text” “After File Name”.

Use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy all of the data from your old scratch disk to the new one, then unplug the old disk & rename the new one with exactly the same name as the old one.

Your client needs to have FCP installed. I think that HDV codecs first appeared in FCP v 5.0 or 5.1.

1998×1080? That’s not standard, you may want to double-check.
Regardless, I’d do this one of 2 ways.
1- export your FCP projects and use Compressor to make the TIFF sequences. You can use the geometry tab in the Compressor inspector to adjust the sizing & cop.
2- send each FCP timeline to Motion and export directly from Motion to TIFF sequences. Change your Motion project settings to the correct size & aspect, then adjust the scaling & cropping on the master layers that contain each track of your FCP timline in your Motion project.
You don’t need to do any re-timing, just render them frame for frame & tell the people at the other end what the original frame rates were.

You can either use FCP’s batch export or you can use Compressor to do this.
DVCPro HD looks like it’s a little north of 19TB for 400 hours, ProRes Proxy at 1920×1080 is about 6.5TB, at 1280×720 it goes down to 3.4TB.
To do this in Compressor, I’d make a preset and set that as my default, along with a default destination. Then I’d drop a couple of dozen clips at a time into Compressor to break it into batches. Or you could make a droplet of your preset & destination & drop a couple of dozen shots at a time onto the droplet. If you go this route, you may need to use Automator to remove any excess text that Compressor tries to add onto the back end of your file names.
In FCP, simply select all of the shots you want to export, right click & choose “Batch Export”. In the batch window, you can choose the encoding settings & destination for the entire batch. Your FCP manual has full details.
You will probably want to test all of this out first with a small batch & a test project. And allow a couple of days (weeks?) for encoding!

You would be better off doing this in Soundtrack Pro, but you may need to add some 3rd party audio filters to do it. There are no packages of “audio transitions” per se, but you can build your own by cranking the effect (probably by routing your signal through a bus) up & down as you go in & out of the transition.
