I have Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 with a MAC 10.4.11…AND WHEN I DIGITIZE FOOTAGE…IT HAS BEEN FREEZING PERIODICALLY. IT HAPPENS 3 TIMES IN A ROW IN ONE SECOND INCREMENTS AND THEN MAY BE OK FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES BEFORE FREEZING AGAIN. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO THE CAUSE? THIS HAS JUST STARTED TO HAPPEN WITHIN THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS.

It could be a number of things – are you capturing from tape? Are you using a deck or a camera to capture? How much room is left on your hard drive? Are you capturing to an external drive or the internal? If it’s an external and a firewire, that’s probably the problem – they’re too slow. You also may need more RAM and to clean up your internal drive. Send more info and we’ll try to help!

You’re dropping frames. Typically, this is because your hard drives are too slow to keep up with the data rate of the video you’re trying to capture.

What kind of tape are you trying to capture from? To what type of drive array? Formatted how? How are you connected to the video tape? What codec are you capturing to?

I’m using SONY MINI-DV 60 MIN. PREMIUM TAPE. THE DRIVE IS A LACIE EXTERNAL TERABYTE FIREWIRE DRIVE….I’M CONNECTED TO THE VIDEO VIA FIREWIRE…AND I’M CAPTURING TO A QUICK TIME CODEC.
Could my LACIE being dying out on me because I just replaced the power supply for it about a month ago…and before I did…it was making a noise like it was “breathing”!!! I didn’t know what was going on….but the power supply was extremely hot….so much so I put a fan on it to cool it down and keep the LACIE from making that noise.

    Hi,
I am capturing from tape and I’m putting on the External drive thru firewire from a mini dv deck. The thing that has me troubleshooting this is I’ve never had a problem like this before and it seems like the freezing began once I got a new power supply for the LACIE. Also another thing I got about 4 months ago is the INTERNET SAFETY.COM feature for my computer. I have noticed that even though I DON’T have the internet on at the time….MY FINAL CUT PRO WILL STOP WHILE I’M VIEWING VIDEO ON A TIMELINE…AND I’LL LOOK UP IN THE LEFTHAND CORNER OF THE MONITOR TO SEE THE “SAFE EYES” (which is what it is called) pops up on my computer. I called that company and they told me that the SAFE EYES program will “CHECK ITSELF” periodically even if its off. I did check the video at the time it happened during rendering one time and it in fact “froze the video 3 times in about 5 seconds”. But then there are times where the “SAFE EYES” won’t pop up and it still FREEZES. I want to get rid of the “SAFE EYES” safety on the computer. Could that be part of the problem?
