Restored files lack .mov extension
Last year I backed up a 2007 project, media files and all. When I restored the media files they were listed as “Unix executable files,” having apparently lost their .mov extensions.
(FWIW, here was the trip that these Quicktime files took: Tiger Mac Intel to PC hard drive to the LTO tape system on the PC; then back from LTO tape to PC to Snow Leopard Mac. I’m working on making the process cleaner, but it has worked perfectly before this episode.)
I can right click on each media file, “Get Info,” and use “Name & Extension” to add .mov to each file -> in Final Cut Pro, Reconnect Media -> Success.
But there are hundreds of files to add the extension.
(1) is there a global way to add extensions to files in Snow Leopard?
(2) where did I go wrong, so that the files lost their .mov extensions?Thanks!

You can use Automator to add the .mov extension back. It’s actually pretty easy, you need to input your files with “Get Specified Finder Items” or “Get Folder Contents”, then use “Rename Finder Items”. Set the rename to “Add Text” “After File Name”.

I don’t use it but there is app called Automator (part of the OS software) that can record and playback most task. I don’t know how to get it to look into a folder and run the add.mov to all the files but it might be worth taking a chance.
In the end adding the .mov can do pretty fast just by doing it with keyboard shortcuts.
Select the file, hit return, down arrow, type or paste .mov, return again, use .mov
down arrow to select the next file and repeat. -

A related question, that predates (but is very much part of) this situation:
At some point in the rosy-colored past, when I used Reconnect Media/Reconnect All Files in Relative Path, FCP elegantly restored connections to many media files at once.
For whatever reason, when I try that now (and for some months now) I only get the one file.
I am using every variety of the parameters that I can think of:
Matched Name and Reel Only – whether checkmarked or not.
Locate or Search – either technique for locating the file.This is going to be a lot of work relinking all these files. Am I missing something?

I see that too, sometimes. Don’t know why it happens. I didn’t see it with FCP v5 or 6, but I see it with FCP v7.

Another opyion for tasks like these: use Name Changer. Lots of different features for flexible renaming.
