December 27, 2009 at 6:26 pm in reply to: color correction problem with XdcamEx footageXDCam is one of those codecs that uses very low color sampling. You could try adding some color smoothing (also known as chroma smoothing) in front of the color correction to reduce the jaggies.
Look under Effects>Video Filters>Key>Color Smooting- 4:1:1. The 4:2:2 version is for codecs like DVCPro HD or ProRes that have better color sampling.
If you’re not satisfied with the result, try downloading the demo Nattress Big Box of Tricks and see if his G Chroma Smoother works any better for you.

There absolutely is. But it starts with better logging and media management on your part.
When you send a file to STP as an audio file project, you send the entire file. If you capture whole tape rolls, that’s what you send. If you want to send discrete little bits, you either have to change your logging habits or you need to media manage the project down to remove the unused media.

I would second Mark’s recommendation for Conduit. Motion (or FCP or even AE) + Conduit is almost a replacement for Shake. Plus, Motion (and FCP) can do a lot of things that Shake cannot, or easily do things that are hard in Shake. So adding Conduit is a very powerful step up in what you can do, and opens up may new options for how to do it.

December 22, 2009 at 9:19 pm in reply to: Tiff Sequence with Timecode? Sony XDCAM to Color CorrectYou should be able to drop your original XDCam clips into Compressor and make uncompressed QT from there. Compressor will pass the TC through by default.
[Colin Edelman] “I’m told that the Sony EX3 is not usually used on a professional basis, therefore doesn’t have a recognized workflow to preserve timecode from offline to online without this manual labor. “
I think that whoever told you that is either hopelessly out of touch, or is trying to cover up the fact that they’re hopelessly out of date and don’t know how to work with these newfangled tapeless systems that are becoming all the rage.

[jason leue] “QT and fCheck both wouldn’t let me save it out, they both said that I don’t have permission.”
you need to check the permissions on the disk or folder you’re trying to save the QT in. That needs to be set to allow you to write to the directory. You do this in the Finder using “Show Info”. Consult the Finder help menu if you need more help.

[Eban Olivier] “I pulled in AVC intra footage into FCP log and transfer that was shot LOG C on a D21.”
AVC Intra is a Panasonic P2 format. The Arri D21 shoots in Arri Raw format. These are very different formats.
You can run everything through Color to make a log to lin conversion, or you can do this in AE, Shake or Combustion.

I have to say that I’m excited, even though I can’t see being able to afford a McSmoke anytime soon. I’d certainly like to see more of their line move to the Mac, with this kind of pricing. McLustre for under $20k? McFlame? Cool.
And as for “Phenomenon”, well, Apple never actually announced it… They only announced that they were killing Shake, not that they were replacing it. Which leaves me profoundly disappointed, because I love Shake.
I suspect that the decision to kill Shake was prompted by the need to rewrite it from the ground up, demanding resources that were already being spread thin by the need to upgrade Motion, turn Final Touch into Color maintain FCP and continue to devolop Mac OS. All funded by iTunes, iPods and iPhones, not actual Mac or FCP sales.
Maybe Motion or FCP will eventually get a nodal interface. You can get an idea of what that might be like by trying out the Conduit plugin from DV Garage- it’s not bad.
Maybe They’ll eventually come round and create a Shake replacement, although it makes more sense in some ways to simply add more Shake-like features to Motion and FCP.

[Eric Goggin] “I captured the video without naming the files but I named them in the browser.”
This is a bad idea, for just this reason. When you log & capture, you have the opportunity to give your clips meaningful names. Take that opportunity.
[Eric Goggin] “In the capture scratch they’re named “untitled(#). Are there any other ways to find them? Does the FCP know the original name of the clips?”
Nope. you are hosed. Sorry.

I think you are hosed. If you can reshoot, do so. If you can’t reshoot, cut around it. If you “need” the shot, well, sorry to hear that.
