[Alan Okey] “Isn’t Animation 4:4:4 RGB?”

Yes, but it’s 8 bits and there can be banding in gradients. ProRes 4:4:4:4 is 12 bits, no banding, but also no Windows, no Linux. 🙁

I’m fond of image sequences for these reasons. You can export a 16 bit tiff sequence with alpha from any platform that can be used in any platform. And no banding!

[Dan Newton] “now i know i need to put anamorphic bars on them as i cant stretch it as it will look dreadful.”

Bars are not anamorphic, bars are letterboxed. Anamorphic means stretched.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anamorphic_widescreen

[Dan Newton] “can i USE 1:85:1 BARS”

    1.85 is not 16×9. 16×9 is 1.78.

You should check with your client to find out what they want, anamorphic or letterboxed, 16×9 or 1.85.

January 6, 2010 at 3:14 am in reply to: motion to fcp transfer problems

Most people don’t understand how stabilizers work.

All stabilizers, Smoothcam included work by analyzing the camera motion and moving the clip in the opposite direction of the camera motion. If it sees the camera move up or left, it moves the clip down or right.

If you’re working with interlaced footage, moving the clip up & down can cause the fields to be reversed, causing the jitter.

This is not a bug in FCP, it’s a shortcomming of working with interlaced video.

You can work around it by deinterlacing, but that will soften your footage. I suspect that you’re deinterlacing your footage in Motion (not necessarily on purpose), and that’s why it’s less jittery.

A better workaround is to either use a tripod or SteadiCam or to shoot progressive. And use a tripod anyway, I’m tired of shaky cam video.

January 4, 2010 at 2:56 pm in reply to: Countdown, FFoA, & Reel Breaks

FFOA follows exactly 2 seconds after the 2-pop. Hence the name 2-pop.

When you break your show up into reels, each reel gets its own timeline, complete with countdown head and tail pops. Most sound and picture finishing houses prefer to work in 20 minute reels.

OK, turns out it’s the DVD Studio Pro manual that covers this in detail. Look up “Square Pixels in Graphics” and it will give you guidelines for setting up your Photoshop documents.

Also, if you have a relatively recent version of Photoshop, any of the last 3 or 4 versions have supported non square pixels for SD. You can load a preset that uses the proper pixel aspect ratio in Photoshop and create your graphic there. If you use Illustrator, the film & video presets are set up for square pixel equivalents.

As usual, I agree with Bob. You should be able to find a used Kona 2 for around $400 with the breakout box. Your Igniter can only do SD, a K2 will do HD as well.

I don’t have any immediate help for you, but I can tell you from my own experience that the High Point products are crap. You’d be much better off migrating to a RAID controller made by either Atto or Areca.

Your FCP manual discusses this in some detail. Please look this up in your manual.

December 28, 2009 at 3:11 pm in reply to: Multiclipping

Your FCP manual explains in detail how to make a multiclip sequence, so there’s no need to go back over that here.

You should be aware, though that to sync your 5 cameras in a multiclip sequence, the timecode must match to the frame. IOW, if camera 1 sees something at 02:02:02:05 and camera 2 sees that same event at 02:02:02:00, they will be 6 frames out of sync.

December 28, 2009 at 12:48 am in reply to: 4X3 to 16X9 for Digibeta

[David Roth Weiss] “You can reposition vertically if this cuts off any portion of the frame.”

If you do this, you must be extremely careful that each shot is positioned vertically on an even numbered whole integer. Otherwise, you will reverse the fields and your tape will be rejected because of interlacing problems.
