I’ve found that Avid exports in any codec other than DNxHD 10 bit will give some sort of gamma or black level shift. Either have them give you files in DNxHD 10 bit, or have them give you an EDL and the source tapes.

I think the System Profiler in the Apple Menu will tell you. Also, you might want to look for an app called Mac Tracker. It’s a database of every Mac ever built and is very useful in figuring out what kind of cards, RAM etc are compatible with each Mac.

If you can put more memory in your Mac, you should. It will help to stabilize FCP, even though it won’t render faster. Use a firewire drive, not USB. Also, convert your VOB files to something that’s friendlier, like DV.

You need to photograph the actor and the sky separately and then combine them later as a composite. Shoot the actor agains a greenscreen, shoot a sky at a matching angle. Use Shake, AE, Motion, or Nuke, etc to pull the key and make the composite.

The short answer is that you’re doing everything wrong.
You’re trying to cut VOB files, you should convert them into quicktime files that will be easier to edit.
You’re working off of your system drive, which is also busy trying to run your computer.
You’re working on an older, slower Mac with barely enough memory.

That’s where things get a wee bit technical. I’d say that some people certainly can, some certainly can’t and most of the rest of us might be able to, given enough patience.
