It does on my system. I’ve never seen the kind of artefacting you describe on any FCP system that I’ve worked on. Which doesn’t make you a bad person, but you’ve got some kind of issue there that most people don’t have.

I’ve also gotten good results with the Chroma Blur from Rock River Studios, or the white/black diffusion that the Nattress Film effects offers.

First, are you monitoring your work on an external monitor? If not, then you’ve no proper way to judge the real quality of your work.
Second, have you rendered the still at full quality? If not, then you’re not seeing the real quality of what your doing.
Third, there are no inches in video, DPI is meaningless. What are the real dimensions, in pixels, of your picture? Is it at least large enough to do the move that you’re describing? From the sound of it, your dimensions should be at least 1440X960 pixels, maybe as high as 2160X1440.

Don’t export a QT from Motion, just import your motion project into FCP & render it there. If you’re trying to use alpha channels, you’d have to render it in FCP anyway, so why render 2X?

Basically, Gimp is a free, open source knockoff of Photoshop. You do need to have X11 installed on your Mac to use it, though. You should have an X11 installer on your Tiger or Panther install disks.

I suspect that one of the appendices in the manual would give a list of keyboard shortcuts. Also, if you open up the either the keyboard remapping or the button list in the tools menu, you’ll find all of the keyboard commands there as well.

Photoshop recognizes many color spaces, alas, YUV is not among them. The gama shift you’re seeing is the change from YUV in FCP to RGB in Photoshop, & back to YUV in FCP. If you can’t match it with the CC tools in FCP, then you might be better of working in an RGB app like After Effects.

Not in one step. You can make the elemental mpeg & audio streams with Compressor, but then you have to find some 3rd party software to multiplex the 2 streams together.

Well, 1st off, are you proofing your footage on an NTSC video monitor? If not, then all bets are off. There is simply no way to accurately see the effect of your filters without a proper video monitor to view it on.
2nd, your workflow is wrong. You shouldn’t be applying filters to thumbnails in the browser. you should apply them in the viewer prior to editing the footage in the timeline, or you can apply filters to clips in the timeline after the fact. Either way, you can view the results of your work on your external video monitor.
