I’m editing DVCPRO HD footage and every time I need to cut from black – whether it’s a Slug, gap or a Photoshop file imported to FCP – the picture gets chromatically inverted for a split second. It’s visible either while playing a sequence or stepping through it frame by frame (but not while actually standing on the frame following black). I don’t use NTSC monitor since my final delivery format will be a Quick Time file and a DVD so I can’t tell whether it’s a display related problem but so far my compressed rough cuts show the problem when played in Quick Time player.
I don’t want to be forced to fade from black – it just doesn’t feel right in some cases.

Try a “soft cut” which is actually a 3-frame dissolve (looks virtually the same as a cut, but it might solve your problem.)

Even a 2 frame dissolve “solves” the problem but a cut is a cut and “virtual” is not “the same” (my apologies for being snotty; I couldn’t resist it 🙂 I would expect any editing software to deal properly with the most basic editorial device so in my book it’s a major problem.

It does on my system. I’ve never seen the kind of artefacting you describe on any FCP system that I’ve worked on. Which doesn’t make you a bad person, but you’ve got some kind of issue there that most people don’t have.
