Are you sure that they are really the producers? Do they really have rights to the film? It’s unusual that they would have no access to the edit masters or the original source material.
Can you find out who posted the film & authored the disk in question? If you can you should find out if they even got paid for the work that they did. Find that out before you spend any actual time working on the project.

That says it all. I don’t think you need a book, I think you need a finishing editor. Someone who can online & polish the pieces for you. Yes, it would probably mean raising your rates if you had to pay for an extra day of editing on each project, but you might be able to get better clients with a more polished look.
BTW, to answer your more specific questions:
1-4: Depends on each specific VO, dissolve or title, but generally, as long or short as “it” wants to be. IOW, let the pace of the VO & beat of the music be your guide, the rhythms & timing of the cutting determine the dissolve/fade times, and make sure each & every title is readable at a moderate to slow pace.
5: I like to dissolve between moving shots while both shots are moving. It just looks more organic to me
6: Depends on the look. But you were asking that rhetorically, weren’t you?Arnie

I’ve heard of these. Don’t expect to find blanks at Wall-Mart or CompUSA. These disks are custom made to order by replicator houses. You have to give the replicator separate masters for the DVD & the CD sides. You’ll have to order at least one or two thousand, though.

Ask the Avid editor or post house that’s bumping you up to DBeta what’s best. They may have specific requirements, or they may be very flexible.

Which is it? ASAP, or “I need to mull it over”? Those are 2 very different situations suggesting very different needs. Can’t he tell the difference? Which makes me wonder if he tell the difference between a well produced video & crap?
If you already think $5K is cheap, then don’t lower your quote anymore. Let him find a HS student with an old handycam, & let him explain to his clients why their videos look like amateur crap.
BTW, if you already think he’s likely to be a problem, wait until it’s time to get paid!

You might want to take a look at Cinepaint for this. It’s open source (free!), & based on an old version of Photoshop, so you can use familiar cloning & painting tools to remove the problematic pixels. What makes it good for this application is that it has a “flip book” feature that lets you load sections of an image sequence. It supports tiff & targa sequences, & I think it also supports jpeg & png sequences. It does not support pict files.

go to the support section of the apple web site & to a search for the text of that error message. this is a well documented problem that effects a small number of users, & apple has published a whitepaper that will tell you how to fix it.

FCP can already do the 2 things you want, without the use of 3rd party plugins. If you don’t know how to change the volume of the audio in your viewer, or scale & center video using the motion tab, that’s not a problem with FCP, that’s your problem of not knowing how to use it.
