Not close, but rather right on target. They need to produce a license from the composer for you to legally include that in the video.
And there is no waiver that they can sign that will transfer your liability to them. That would be like a money launderer signing a waiver for the person he’s converting the cash for.

Why should they? You can change your capture scratch at any time simply by opening the “System Preferences” menu. If you want to change it for each project, Apple is not actually stopping you. I can see no disadvantage to the way FCP handles media & scratch disks.

Log & capture your tapes carefully, & make sure you input correct Reel names.

Personally, I set my whites in PS at 235, 235, 235, or 92%. If the graphics are already a done deal, then I use either the 3 Way CC or the Proc Amp to legalize them. But that’s just me, YMMV.

In FCP, you can do this using the “Gradient Wipe” transition, but in your graphic the incoming section needs to be black, and your out going needs to be white.

Try this:
Duplicate the clip with the proper keyframes.
Edit the clip you want to apply the garbage matte to into the timeline, then Copy that clip (command-c)
Now, select the duplicate clip with the garbage matte & Paste Attributes (option-v), and choose “Paste Content”.Arnie

You’ll need to light the interview properly for the final look you want to achieve. If the lighting is right, then you can drop out the color & you’ll be 85-90% of the way there. You might want to take a look at some well lit B&W movies as an example. Citizen Kane, My Darling Clementine, The Third Man all jump to mind. Also, Greta Garbo was often lit with a “key” light that was a little hotter to pop her out of the scene.
