You could make a template in Compressor, & then use the option to “Export via Compressor”.

Digital Heaven has a $10.00 plug in that might speed things up for you. It won’t make the whole comp, but it will help speed up positioning/cropping of individual clips.

DVCPro 50 tapes”Are the external drives FW drives? That could be why you’re dropping frames. FW drives have never been certified for use with FCP, & when you string a bunch of them together they can choke on the material.
Is the internal drive your system drive? That’s a big no-no. You should never use your system drive for media.
You should have a 2nd internal drive in your Mac reserved just for media & nothing else. Currently, the biggest you can put in there is 500 GB. That should be enough to hold over 18 hours of material. If you need more storage than that, then you should invest in an external RAID, either SCSI or fiber channel.

As I discovered by accident the other day, using the scroll wheel of my mouse will move any slider in the 3 Way CC that the pointer is positioned over, including the chroma, saturation & luma limiting controls! Sweeeeet!
And, while I’m at it, using the scroll wheel of the mouse to adjust the numeric controls of most filters.

Well, if it’s trimming the footage, then it’s not making “a transition between clips without overlapping footage”, it’s overlapping the footage for you. That may seem like I’m splitting hairs, but it’s a very basic principal. The vastly overwhelming majority of transitions require some overlap, and the rest need some spectacular way to hide the lack of overlap.
That being said, FCP will do what you want. Someone or other seems to ask how to do this at least once a week. Just search the forum for “overwrite with transition”.
