    Hey guys,

About 2 months ago I purchased a 1.6 SATA RAID array with four of the 400 gig hitachi drives. When making the purchase, I got a casing for the Raid setup that could handle 8 drives instead of four, should the day come when I would want to upgrade and double my storage. Well, that day is today, but the shop that built my array just informed me that Hitachi is discontinueing the 400 gig drives I currently have.

Upon doing more research, I see that Hitachi has the new 500 gig drives. Since my knowledge of RAID is limited, perhaps some kind soul out there can help.

Can I add four 500 gig drives in with the currect 400 gig drives on the same array? I believe that it’s feasible, but I don’t know if RAID requires all of the drives in the RAID loop to be the same size and type.

    Many thanks in advance.

Is your setup removable? If you have a RAID like the FirmTek, it’s easy.

I have this setup. Now you can just have a set of two drives for each client. I have sets of 2x250gig Hitachi drives. At a cost of about $250 per set, it’s reasonable. And it works great. Pop ’em in and go. The best part is then you have unlimited drive space.

Unfortunately, no. It’s an eclosed SATA RAID unit built for 8 drives, four of which have the Hitachi 400 gig drives.

The guys I bought it from say you can only use the exact same drives in the entire array. No mixing and matching.

This might be a good time to buy some 400 GB drives… while you still can!
