If you need color go with the Epson. If you only need monochrome, then Casio makes a family of dirt cheap thermal printers that are supposed to be really good. Prices start at $75 or $100.

You probably don’t have the mpeg 2 component for QT installed. You can either buy if from Apple, or you can look up the free VLC player on versiontracker.com & use that.

you can use a grayscale image in the gradient wipe transition to do this. Should be in the manual.

Hmm… you say that when you have it set differently, it looks different? well, that sounds normal, doesn’t it?
I’d recommend that you read the manual that came with the monitor. It explains (though not too well) what the difference is between the 2 gamma settings.

I’ve seen one at a trade show. The blacks are just as good as on the 17″.

Does your monitor display 16X9? Have you switched it to 16X9?

And the sooner the better. Has the distributor already picked a lab? If not, then you could speak to 2 or 3 labs to get a general idea of what you’d be delivering. Each lab has it’s own way of doing things, though.
In general, most 35mm theatrical in the us is 1.85. If you shot in 4X3, there’s going to be a significant reframing of each shot. If you shot 16X9, then you might be able to just crop the bottom a little bit.
I’ve had a couple of labs tell me that titles, lower 3rds, etc should be done in 2K, so that they appear sharper on the 35mm release. How you develop & deliver the titles & graphics is going to be unique to your FCP setup & which lab you use.
The lab can run your tape through their Terranex to upconvert your doc before they color correct & make a negative. Or you can deliver to most labs on hard drives. which is best for you is something to discuss with the lab.

The UL3D is for PCI. You should be using the UL4D for a PCI-X G5. OTOH, if you switch to fiber, you open up the possibilities of using shared storage for both edit bays. Would that alone be worth the switch? Setting up a shared storage network will be expensive, though.
