There are no DIY RAID 3 solutions on the mac right now. You can buy a fiber or SCSI RAID box with RAID 3, but you can’t build your own. For PCIe Power Macs, you can buy a Rocket Raid from Highpoint Technologies that will give you RAID 5 on as many as 8 SATA drives in a single 8 drive or a pair of 4 drive enclosures. With the new 750 GB drives, that could give you over 5TB at RAID 5.

All of the dual-core G5s are PCIe, including the quad. If you have a G5 that predates dual-core, then it’s probably PCI-X, in which case there’s a different card from Highpoint. Datoptic also makes a RAID 5 card for PCI-X that’s mac compatible. If you’re not sure, go to versiontracker.com & look for a clever little app called Mactracker. You can look up your mac in their database & it will tell you what kind of PCI slots you have.

We’re actually putting off the purchase until we return from shooting on location in about 6 or 7 weeks, in case prices drop & some new options come to the market. For now, we’ve settled on Highpoint’s Rocket Raid 2322, which is the only card that can do RAID 5 on a PCIe mac. The box we’re looking at is the 8 drive SC-SAT84X from PC-Pitstop. It has 2 infiniband connectors for the Rocket Raid, & it has 3 case fans & a fan on every drive tray.

Actually, it’s more like 1/3 the cost! For the feature I’m working on, we looked at SCSI, fiber & SATA. SATA gives us 4TB for around $3K, including the controller card. With fiber it would have been closer to $10K! Plus another $1k for the controller.
If you’re willing to build your own array, you can buy a case from datoptic.com, pc-pitstop.com or cooldrives.com, & fill it with drives from either newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com. Most of those vendors sell the controller cards, as well.

Without meaning to be crass, you should use project settings that are appropriate to the project. If you’re working with DV, use DV settings. If the next project is 8 bit, use 8 bit. It may vary from project to project, and many projects go through an offline phase, followed by an online where the settings change.

If you’re shooting to a Firestore, then you don’t have the option of 720pN. You have to shoot with pulldown, regardless of whether you choose 720 or 1080, so why not shoot 1080, & avoid the extra step? If you do decide to shoot at 720, though, you can do the upconvert yourself if you have a Kona 2 or 3 card. Simply rent a D5 deck, set the card to do the upconvert in the Kona control panel & lay it off to tape as 1080.
