4.5 upgrade to 5.1 Very Nervous
Posted by Melissa on July 25, 2006 at 6:14 pmHello.
We are currently finishing up a project in FCP 4.5. Our online session is going to be in FCP 5.1.The online editor recommended that we upgrade ourselves because it would make better economic sense for us to deal with any unforeseen problems here, rather than in the online suite. We are obviously really nervous about how this upgrade will effect our project.
We are working with drop frame, 4 by 5 sequences. We have thousands of subtitles that were created in Borris. We have about 3.5 TB of media. Any thoughts on what we should be preparing for in this upgrade? What major problems will we encounter? What will happen to our titles?
Thanks ahead of time.

July 25, 2006 at 6:34 pmWhy are you going to online in 5.1? I would HIGHLY recommend you online the project in 4.5 and then upgrade AFTER you complete the project.

July 25, 2006 at 6:36 pmI would stay away from upgrading this huge project right now. Back up all important documents and upgrade in between and do a fresh clean wipe and install of your OS (then update with software updater), reinstall all of your apps, and then update those. This is the protocol I use when updating a system and even though it takes a while to reinstall everything, it results in a very stable system.
If you do the upgrade now, the huge unforeseen problem you will have is asking yourself why this project is not working correctly after the upgrade. The difference between quicktime versions alone is a good reason not to do it. You can export an XML for your online editor and they should be able to rebuild/recapture from that.
When you say your titles were created in Boris, do you mean you used TItle 3d that came with FCP or do you have the full version of Boris? If you used the full version then the online edit suite must have it to; if you used TItle3D make sure that the online facility has it installed as it comes free with FCP.

July 25, 2006 at 7:44 pmWhat relationship do you have with the online facility? Do you have a choice?
Their advice to upgrade, honestly, is really bad advice. It *may* be cheaper if everything works perfectly, but if your project implodes because of the upgrade, was it worth the potential savings?
It’s far better to do it the way Jeremy, Dave & Walter suggest than to nuke your perfectly fine 4.5 system to upgrade to 5.1.
Any major upgrades in the middle of a project is just courting disaster. I’d ask them tougher questions about why they think it’s so important for you to bring them a 5.1 project. Get to the bottom of it before you bring them your project. They may not really be the right facility for you.

5.0 will read files from 4.5. I don’t see why 5.1 wouldn’t.

July 25, 2006 at 8:15 pmOn the other hand, wouldn’t you be rather concerned about onlining at any facility still using FCP 4.5???

I don’t think it’s the version of Final Cut to worry about, it’s the advice to upgrade your system when you have 1000s of titles and 3.5 TBs of media to manage.

July 26, 2006 at 10:41 amI understand the logic. There will be most likely be issues in the online suite when they open your 4.5 project.
In particular if there have been any speed affected clips. By you upgrading and sorting these issues out yourselves you will be able to fix any issues much faster than in online as you will know how the shots should look, sound etc. I don’t like upgrading in the middle of a project but if you have no choice, then this IMHO is the best way for you to do it. Remember 4.5 and 5.1 can co-exsist on the one computer so you could still keep your 4.5 project as a reference. 5.1 is a great upgade to FCP and well worth having.
If you do decide to go this way make sure you select BEST quality for you graphics when opeing the 4.5 project for the first time. They will look much better than 4.5.
