XML is a markup language, like HTML. It contains no media. It contains only metadata about each clip. The timing, the in & out points, filters, etc. You can export a timeline in XML & open it up in Text Edit or a word processor to take a look at it.

[Jack Kelly] “and having to spend 3x what the hardware would cost if I assembled it myself).”

Have you really priced out what it would cost to build the same system yourself?

Go to newegg.com or tigerdirect.com and price the same pair of dual-core or quad-core Xeon CPUs, 1GB of 667MHz RAM, the same graphics card & the same hard drive, on a mother board with dual 1Gb ethernet connections, FW800 and 2 or 3 USB 2.0 ports. Plus a superdrive, case & 400 or 500 watt power supply.

Guess what? You’ll probably wind up within $500 of what Apple charges. And that still won’t include an operating system. Let alone Mac OS!

Look at what Dell or HP offer for for the same price as the Mac you’re looking at. It probably won’t be any faster or more powerful. Although it may come with a 19″ monitor.

Just beware, if these files did not originally have a .mov extension, then adding the extension will require that you re-link all of these files to your clips in FCP.

When you add a transition if FCP, you’re effectively lengthening your clip to add the pre or post roll needed. I know of no application that will automatically move your keyframes when you lengthen or shorten a clip. Not AE, not Motion, not Shake, etc.

December 13, 2007 at 2:57 pm in reply to: AE CS3 and DVCPRO-HD color shifting

[Heath Comeadow] “The problem isn’t AE it’s FCP’s gamma assumptions.”

[walter biscardi] “That shift has always been there. AE is RGB, FCP is YUV. Been using After Effects for something like 12 years now and with FCP since 2001. That shift has always been there.”

I see the same kind of shift with both AE and Motion. I don’t see this shift with Shake. Shake is doing something to manage the gamma that AE and Motion are not, so I can cut shots coming back from Shake into my timeline without having to CC them afterwards.

If you’re already getting a Kona 3, then the MXO will add nothing for you. You can buy a Panny plasma for around the same price as the MXO.

December 12, 2007 at 5:03 am in reply to: urgent HDV – DV settings

There is a wonderful diagram in your FCP manual that shows how to use a DV camera or deck to connect a TV to your Mac. That’s a good place to start.

[Mister T.] “I got HDV footage that i edit in a dv 10 uncompressed seq.”

There is no such thing as “dv 10 uncompressed”. DV is compressed, and is 8 bits. 10 bit uncompressed is not DV.

[Mister T.] “I shoot dv beacuse there a lot of graphics involved, that were made in dv.”

the DV codec is not very good for graphics. The compression scheme looses a lot of the color information. If your graphics are designed for DV, they may not translate that well to an uncompressed timeline.

Yup. You want the “Mac Edition”. It’s an 8x AGP card specifically for PCI-X macs. I have it in a dual 2.5.
