AE CS3 and DVCPRO-HD color shifting
Ok, I’m new at using DVCPRO-HD. Doesn’t seem a search yielded any results that seem conclusive on this problem
Color bars out of FCP. Into AE. Render to DVCPRO-HD and back into FCP. Not only a gamma shift, but the colors have shifted: a small percentage desaturated and a couple degrees clockwise on the vectorscope!
Combustion DOESN’T have a problem. It renders the exact same color.
So what gives? It looks somewhat like a 709/601 colorspace problem, but the shift is so dramatic I think it’s something more complicated. I’ve forced AE into 709 color management the whole way through, I’ve also turned color managment off.
Rendering to animation codec from AE is better, but it looks like simple 601/709 problems at that point. I’m stymied.

Have you tried Apple sRGB as the color space?
(I used that just last week and had no problem)
And you are avoiding “quicktime conversion” right?

nope, sRGB colorspace still has problems. And no QT Conversion. Self-contained files from FCP. Are you using the same versions of software as me Borjis?

Shake doesn’t seem to have this problem, either. This has long been a problem with AE, and it’s not limited to DVCPro codecs, either.

Well crap. I’ve been using AE a lot lately, but all in uncompressed codecs, and it’s been a solid performer. I’m surprised I haven’t turned up more people having problems on the Cow. It’s a massive shift that’s unacceptable.

The problem isn’t AE it’s FCP’s gamma assumptions.

That shift has always been there. AE is RGB, FCP is YUV. Been using After Effects for something like 12 years now and with FCP since 2001. That shift has always been there. You have to make adjustments to the image after it comes back to FCP.

I see the same kind of shift with both AE and Motion. I don’t see this shift with Shake. Shake is doing something to manage the gamma that AE and Motion are not, so I can cut shots coming back from Shake into my timeline without having to CC them afterwards.
