FCP Color and ATI Radeon 9600

ProRes will work OK I’d think, but you need a beefier card to run Color and Motion 3… take a look at ATI’s X1900 for your particular Mac.

thanks for the quick response. I think the x1900 is only for PCI-e, and my box is PCI-x.

is there another card I can get?

So, will Color just flat out not work with my Radeon 9600?

We have the nVidia Ultra 6800 in our G5 Dual 2.0. That runs Color just fine.

Not really sure. It used to be the “Upgrade Graphics Card” from Apple so it came in an Apple box at the time. To be honest, we only use Color sparingly on that machine as it is our oldest in the fleet. ATI cards are definitely better for Color in my experience, but this does work.

Is the ATI x800XT still around? I thought that was a PCI-X card? Maybe not, it’s been a while.

Yup. You want the “Mac Edition”. It’s an 8x AGP card specifically for PCI-X macs. I have it in a dual 2.5.

You might be able to play ProRes material, but you wont be able to capture ProRes in HD.

We have the ATI Radeon X1900 (which is the Power PC PCIe version) for 2 of our 2.3 Dual Core G5s. Sounds like this guy doesn’t have PCIe so it wouldn’t really work for him.

That said, recently we have had problems with 3rd party plugins in Motion 3 and currently suspect a conflict with this specific graphics card. This is not confirmed, but if anyone else has a similar setup I’d love to talk to you about running some simple tests.
