  • Panasonic plasma or MXO/ACD?

I know, I know, I know… I should spend the $4,000 or so to get a real, broadcast-quality HD monitor for the new HD edit system I’m building. But I just don’t want to spend that right now.

Folks on this forum seem to be making do with either a Panasonic Pro plasma (not sure which models) or Shane’s very intriguing combination of a Matrox MXO and a 23″ Apple Cinema Display HD.

My question is…is there consensus on which of these is better? I expect to have a Kona 3 card, if that affects your answer.

    Thanks for any advice.

If you’re already getting a Kona 3, then the MXO will add nothing for you. You can buy a Panny plasma for around the same price as the MXO.

Thanks Arnie. Do you think the image on the Panasonic will be as good as the image on the Apple Cinema Display? (Again…I know I’m not talking about true broadcast quality stuff here.)

As an owner of a panasonic 9uk, I can tell you its better than the cinema display. Blacks are Black.

If I were you, I’d look around (ebay) for a used Sony PVM14/L5 multiformat CRT. That way you have absolute accuracy for SD and HD at a great price. You can find them in excellent near new condition anywhere from $ 700 – $ 1,800

Walter B and Shane R both own them as well.

Yes I own two of them, an 8k and 9k model. They’re up to the 10k which is even better now.

We run the 42 and 50″ models here though there’s also a 37″. They are simply outstanding monitors. The only question I have is how you set one up properly without having a proper grading monitor. We use our Sony CRTs to eyeball up the Panasonics. Without that, I guess you’ll just have to eyeball up with what’s on your computer display which may or may not be accurate. The Panasonics have a tremendous range of controls so you can pretty much match it up with anything out there.

For the money, you can’t get a better monitor. And you don’t need the MXO, you just feed whatever monitor you get from the Kona 3.

There was one listed in the cow classifieds recently.

I also vote for a Panny monitor if you don’t want to get the Sony. You won’t be able to calibrate though unless you get a huge Wratten filter to put over it for blue only.

Actually, Walter I was referring to the Sony CRT Monitor.

The plasma is great (I have the consumer version of the 10UK at home) But for that budget I’d much rather have the Sony HD Monitor for that extra edge of accuracy.
