After you cahnge the transition lenght in the Effects window, try to right-click it (in the Effects window) and select “set as default transition”.
If it still doesn’t work, maybe you could try to trash FCP’s prefs…

Are you redering in high-precision YUV or 10-bits? A bunch of filters (like Mask Feater and I think Drop shadow) are buggy at more than 8-bits.
But otherwise, FCP 4.5 doesn’t do any fancy filtering, so when you scale/position a layer, it’s sometimes ugly. Solution is either to update to v5, or do it in After Effects.
Heavily saturated graphics also look bad with the DV codec. They become pixaleted at the edges after rendering. the RT preview shows you the orginal, so you must render to see how it’ll look like in DV.
A picture of the glitch would probably help us alot to dertermine what is the problem.

The drives I have have a 3 year waranty. I know because they all fail after about a year… and then all those Lacie drives I’ve seen fail had maxtor drives inside. They are “Diamondmax plus 9”.
The Maxline series is probably fine, but I’m no longer thinking it’s only a matter of coincidence that the Daimond max series fail so often. I’m not buying one of them again, at any price.

is the maxline series more reliable than the diamond max series? I’ve seen so many of these (diamond max) drives fail… mines included.

btw, it can also be some sort of sequence corruption. I remember a project where I was getting dropped frames in the middle of an empty part of the timeline, at a very specific place. This was on FCP 4.1, on a dual G5 2Ghz. Trashing prefs, deleting renders, rebooting the computer, etc did not do it. I had to copy all the clips into another sequence. It seems FCP sometimes creates invisible clips in the timeline.
I remember having opened this project recently on 4.5 and had the same problem. I wonder what I’ll find if I export an EDL or XML…. Maybe the yak let me a surprise?

What I meant is that the EDL timecode is on par with the clip’s timecode (but converted from TC30 to TC24). I didn’t compare it against the tape timecode, but it means that FCP at least exports the EDL correctly.
One thing that is ALWAYS buggy with speed changes and EDLs is variable speed change. Sometimes even a constant speed change can turn into a variable speed change, so you really need to double check.
How are you checking the EDL ? are you actualy importing it on the EQ or are you reimporting it in FCP ? Sometimes I exported EDLs that didn’t reimport in FCP correctly, but did well on Avid Symphony… best way I found is to apply a TC reader to all the clips in FCP, open the EDL in Text Edi and compare the in/out manualy. It’s a pain for long form seuqnces, but it’s quick enough for tv spots.

you can use “x” to mark in/out the clip and then use the delete or backspace key to delete it.
Btw, when you’re on a cut, the x key will mark the right side clip. You need to back off a frame to mark the left side clip.

do you have any speed change in your sequence? It often causes problem.
Something worth noting about capturing with advanced pulldown… the “media start” and “media end” timecode for reversed pulldown clips in advanced mode stays in 30fps format. But FCP convert the clips TC to 24fps when exporting an EDL. I did not use such wokflow so far for 24PA, but exporting a 23.98 sequence with clips captured with advanced pulldown remvoval seems to give a good timecode.
so… did you remove the pulldown uppon capture or with cinema tool ? Can you check that the “media” TC (Item Properties -> Timming) of your clips in the timeline fits with the tape TC ?

and am a bit (only a bit) disappointed of the built in from Final Cut. “Same thing here. The 3way CC is great for quick fixes, but not for precise color correction. Since I started to learn and work on Avid DS, i’m scratching my head when I go back to FCP and I need to do color correction. But even XPress have a better color corrector than FCP…
maybe they should fix the media manager first, tho 😉
