Through doing a little research, I’m getting a number of different opinions on what kind of internal hard drive is the best for my G5. My next purchase will be a Raid, but in the meantime, I’m hoping I can find some level of consistent viewpoints from this community so I can know what’s good to buy.

    Anyone up for a debate?

    Much Thanks in advance.

    Eric,

The Maxtor Maxline SATA drive that I told you about previously at newegg for just $105 was tested against the comparable Seagate drives and it beat them hands down in all catagories. It has a five year warranty too. Just buy one and get back to work.

    Thanks David,

I tried to buy it and it was out of stock, so I looked around and saw some reviews and did some asking. During that time I found some differing opinions about the drive, so I wanted to be sure. If you feel that certain then I will take your advice. Any idea how often they restock at newegg?

    thanks,

    Eric,

They are great drives, and I’ve staked my business on them. Newegg is a huge reseller, I’m sure they will restock quickly. Meanwhil, they do have the 300gb SATA drives at only $121.50 at https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144186. Thats a terrific buy…

    David,

I didn’t see that 300G SATA before, that will work perfectly. Thanks for sending that my way. It seems that you really believe in this product and you have a background with them, so I’ll take your word for all this. I didn’t see anything about a special warrenty on this one…I imagine that 5 year warranty is what made that other 250G drive so high in demand.

Thanks for your time and thoughts.

is the maxline series more reliable than the diamond max series? I’ve seen so many of these (diamond max) drives fail… mines included.

The Diamondmax series is Maxtor’s retail off-the-shelf model. It only has a one year warranty, and undoubtedly they do that for good reason… Maxline is Maxtor’s top of the line OEM model, with a five year warranty. Lots of people get confused because the price on the Maxline OEM is often less than the more flimsy Diamondmax — its most likely that the packaging for the retail model is more expensive than the drive itself.

The drives I have have a 3 year waranty. I know because they all fail after about a year… and then all those Lacie drives I’ve seen fail had maxtor drives inside. They are “Diamondmax plus 9”.

The Maxline series is probably fine, but I’m no longer thinking it’s only a matter of coincidence that the Daimond max series fail so often. I’m not buying one of them again, at any price.
