crappy graphics
Posted by Yednor on November 30, 2005 at 8:52 pmAll of our graphics have artifacts or some sort of crap around the edges of the graphics when viewed on an external broadcast monitor. Firewire out to dual 2.7 G5 to a Sony DSR 45 component out to monitor. I have a solid color 1/3 with the clients logo in the center, the edges of the logo have some sort of artifacts These same graphics are correct in Photoshop or AE. I’ve checked all the settings in Final Cut but nothing has worked. I placed video on track 1, placed a lower third w/alpha on track 2 so that part of the graphic was over the blank track 1, and the graphic is clean, the part that extends over the video on track 1 has some sort of crap on it. We have 3 systems with this problem. Any suggestions?

And since NTSC can’t reproduce the resolution of a computer,
its easily possible to create graphics that a too complex to read-well on video.Gaussian Blur is the blur to use to reduce “image buzz”.
Set it to a low number (between .25 to 2.5 is a good start). -

November 30, 2005 at 9:31 pmWell maybe I wasn’t clear enough, I know how to create the graphics, frame size and so on, the problem is Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD…All of these graphics look fine when viewed on other non FCP systems. When a any graphic, like a square blue box 360×240 is placed on an empty track it is correct. When placed over video, artifacts are introduced, simple as that…

November 30, 2005 at 9:31 pmYednor, if you’re using DV, that’s just how it is.
why we accept DV as a useful codec is anyone’s guess.bogiesan

November 30, 2005 at 9:46 pmAlso, are you viewing these graphics on the Computer monitor, or external TV or NTSC monitor? Never judge the quality of the image using the computer monitor.

Did you READ the links?
They discuss how to make graphics that WORK BETTER in DV.

If they’re done in the DV codec, then yes they do have the same problem. Have you read any of the links provided in the earlier post?
You’re viewing via a DVCAM deck which is DV compresion onto an NTSC monitor. You’ll see DV artifacts in the graphics, especially when there is light against dark.
Want to clean it up? Move to uncompressed.

November 30, 2005 at 11:08 pmTry switch the render quality in Sequence Settings. I’ve had problems with random noise particles showing up on Best when using alpha channel graphics. Also if your graphics ARE RGB+Alpha try removing any filters in FCP you may have put on them – I’ve had FCP it all of a sudden make crap noise around the alpha edges.
Unless you’re seeing DV compression artifacting like the others suggested.

December 1, 2005 at 12:32 amI’ve had this problem before (looks good by itself, but artifacts when put over another clip) when I’ve placed LiveType graphics over text built in FCP. I have never been able to figure it out, so I’ve done work arounds by creating everything in LT and dropping the FCP text or vise versa. I would like to have an answer for this, but my guess is I’ll be told to read those links that were provided earlier. I’ll start there.

No that isn’t “just the way it is”
Finally, 2 guys that make sense CharlieX2 & Eric Klassen
p.s. I didn’t throw in the XP thing to start some argument over which system is better,
