November 11, 2005 at 6:56 am in reply to: HD monitoring using Apple Cinema Displayyeah, it does make sense to go with an analog input card… in fact the the one I work with (at a place where I freelance) is maybe analog too. HD-SDI does have other advantages, but maybe not worth the price for “home” system.
I don’t really understand why is there a discussion whether HDV is broadcast. Of course they won’t take HDV tapes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t shoot HDV and hand out DVCPRO HD or HDCAM. The Sony Z1 gives a very nice HD picture. It’s surprising… of course it’s less sharp than a Sony F900, but subjectively it’s very very nice. It also surprises me how low is the noise on the FX1. I didn’t see a side by side comparison, but it does seem less noisy than a varicam.
Of course the Z1 isn’t going to replace higher end HD, but I do see how great this camera could be for small team small budget documentaries. It’s lightweight, tapes are cheap and easily available, batteries lasts for hours. And it give a outstanding picture… for the price.

November 9, 2005 at 12:02 am in reply to: tryin’ to email a preview: which best MPEG?[ewin] “Trouble is, a 4 minute NTSC sequence exported as a 240×180 MPEG-4 is about 6 MB vs 68 MB using Ken Stone’s Sorenson 3, QTime Conversion (all else same settings) method. “
The built-in sorenson codec is pretty bad, but the commercial one is far, far much better. It competes with MPEG4 for video, and for graphics it’s better than MPEG4. It’s also more compatible, as even older QT versions can view it. The problem is that it’s expensive if you buy the Squeeze Compression Suite. But worth every penny for those who have to send previews by email very often.

[Chris Smith] “Unfortunately AE and even the CC in FCP are not great. AE has old school Photoshop solutions like curves, color balance, etc for correction which is a joke when it comes to coloring video. FCP has the correct controls for color correction, it’s just that the look of it’s color corrector is terrible.”
How can be curves “a joke” for color correction? Every serious color correction package has curves, as they are the most flexible way of balancing colors. But of course, AE’s GUI is very unproductive for color correction. Combustion is much better for that kind of work.
I personaly find FCP CC very limited. It’s really efficeint for quick adjustements, but for very precise tuning, it’s lacking. For example, you can’t adjust the range betwen Shadows, midtones and highlights. There is no Curves. There is no efficient way to work with masks. There is no track-wide effects.
To answer the original question, I have to say that I’ve never found a book which explains it all. An equivalent to Steve Wright’s “Digital compositing for Film”, but for color correction. In short, you must first understand color and then the tools. Find books on digital photography, and tutorials on color correcting.
here’s a few links…

…hmm, all my other links are outdated… sorry, hehbut go to https://www.mattepainting.org and follow a few tutorials. It’s probably not exaclty what you want to do, but it does show how to get a picture to look good.

you’re right… the funny thing is that I remember I was recently able to ripple the TC of an edl on my mac. But I probaly had to do it on an Avid system…
there’s also another utility named EDLMax24 wich again runs in classic. But it’s outrageously priced…
There’s a demo which saves only 10 lines.Instead of rewriting all the timcodes by hand, you should modify the clips TC or add an Aux TC. This methode also preserve speed changes.

it has been broken since v 4.0… why do we have multicam when speed changes
-
you can download an old version of the avid edl manager which runs under classic. I guess that if avid let us download it, it’s legal to use it…
https://www.avid.com/onlineSupport/supportcontent.asp?browse=&productID=0&contentID=3573
it crashes under some circumstances, if I remember right, it’s when you try to drag and drop an edl. you must open it via File ->Open.
Remember that any speed change will not work if you ripple the timecode of the edl.

[RobOday] “but im not getting those looks of weird colouration across seemingly random areas”
Basicaly, use curves to add contrast in different channels (RGB). To add contrast, you must do a S shaped curve. You can add global conrast to the RGB channel and then fiddle with R, G or B separately. I put this filter on an adjustement layer.
You then need to add a black halo using a radial ramp on a solid layer set to multiply. Then another, smaller, set to add, for the central bleach. You put those two layers between the source picture and the adjustement layer.
a composition is worth 1000 words:

great idea. It has been asked very often recently.

you are experienccing a kernel panic. Most often, kernel panics happen due to problematic hardware, especialy RAM, but sometimes it’s a bad third party driver…
do you have special hardware like PCI cards (firewire, scsi, ethernet, etc) ? Have you added ram rencently? do you have an hardware test cd that came with your G4?
