Of course AE already uses 2 CPUs. At least when rendering. It’s not using the full power in EVERY situation, but most of it.
The Gridiron plugin helps when network rendering, which is not the same thing as having multiprocessors on the same computer.

seems like the common symptom of a premultiplication issue. In a movie file with embbeded alpha, you can switch form straight to premultiplied iwth black (FCP calls this “Black”) in the clip’s properties, but i’m not sure you can deal with it when using a track matte.
Maybe you could try to use the “Image mask” effect instead. It doesn’t work for moving mattes, tho. If it doesn’t work, you should do it in After Effects or Combustion.

this error means that a drive has a bad block.
Verify the SMART status of your drives in Disk Utility. A bad drive will show “Failed” in red. Unfortunately, OS X doesn’t suport SMART for FW drives…

[Oliver Peters] “I believe any registered DS owner can get these from Avid and I’m pretty sure they are included with new systems.”
You can actuaaly download it without being a registered user.
https://www3.softimage.com/
then go to Education -> Avid Training Edition.there’s also a very active mailing list. You can regiser on the https://www3.softimage.com/ page or search the archive directly on the we. Many times you are scratching your head about something that is not documented, you can find an answer in the list archive.

Try another file format for your stills… i’ve had a gamma shift when using the PNG format, so I now use TIFF instead.
Also delete FCP’s prefs, create a new project and try to add your graphics to a video clip.
At last, you could install a fresh OS 10.3.9 with FCP 4.5 and QT 6.5 to a firewire drive to see if the problem exist. Maybe there’s something in your installation that is screwing FCP’s alpha.

[j] “-Yes, I did use quite a bit of 3d camera and lights to acheive certain effects in certain parts.
Well, then there’s no way around it. 3D lights are always a performance hog, in any pograms. To optimise you workflow, use the least number of light possible and trim them so they aren’t computed when not used. Use 2D layers when possible. When doing a ram preview to verify your keyframe animation, drop the resolution to third or even quarter.
I know trapcode has some light plugin for AE, but I don’t know how easy they are to use. They probably are a bit faster than AE’s built-in lights.
A G5 or any powerful dual processor PC will also be faster and more importantly let you work on other apps while rendering. And a quad processor, even more…

[Guy] “kidding aside, I’d be pretty pissed if it wasn’t a BIG release after all the waiting.”
it’s funny, but I’m not pissed at all of the delay. I’m really amazed at how well 6.5 runs in term of stability (10.3 G5 2×2). I can’t remember one time it crashed. It did crash a few times with an old plugin I have, but it’s otherwise flawless and bug free. I realize that working with stable apps is much easier on my nerves.
I just hope this will stay true with AE7.

[Mylenium] “That’s not going to help anything when using the 3D renderer. It simply does not this way. Anyway, the render times are quite normal with the 3D renderer, even more so when using the Advanced 3D option. There isn’t much you can do about it.”
I agree with this. The 3D renderer is pretty slow when you are using cameras, lights and shadows. For a 9 minutes video, 14 hours sounds like what you should expect. Of course you could use the OpenGL renderer, but the quality is much worst.
For 3D layers without cameras, light or motion blur, 14 hours would be excessive.

I was going to say it’s just the normal DV compression, but it looks a bit different. These artifacts are finer and more spread out than what DV normaly does… this is assuming what i’m seeing is not JPEG compression artifacts.
What is your exact system config? (OS version, QT version, video hardware, any third party plugin, etc )
Is the problem present with the text generator or only with your photoshop graphics? Which file format are you using for your graphics?
