Hi Clint
[Clint Milner] “Capturing DVD via BlackMagic box into FCP using standard PAL DV 25fps settings. Interlaced and Upper Field First. “
Oops … PAL DV is actually Lower Field First. Sounds like you have a fundamental field order mismatch. So long as nothing is “effected” (transitions, filters, speed changes etc) then you’d probably be fine, but those areas would be rebuilt during render using an incorrect field order, hence the jitter. Was this edit not monitored (during edit) on an interlaced display?
[Clint Milner] “None of these problems are present on any of the intermediate files, only on the DVD.”
How were these intermediate files viewed? Again, they’d have to be viewed properly on an interlaced monitor to see a field order issue, watching a progressive scan rendition (like in the FCP Canvas window) would not display the issue.
[Clint Milner] “is there a way to fix on either my side or the client’s?”
Well f this is indeed a field order issue then either yourself or (probably more easily) your client needs to fix the field order mismatch and re-render.
Hope it helps

Hey Antonio
The “Show Duplicate Frames” feature needs your “clips” to have Reel and Timecode associated to them (as that is how it tracks clip usage) and it will actually work perfectly happily with stills too if you provide them with appropriate tracking data. You can do that using the Modify menu > Timecode function, but take care that each one is assigned a unique Reel or unique Timecode otherwise they’ll all appear to be duplicates of each other.

Hey T.
In FCP, the yellow (proxy) render bar status indicates an effected area that will only play back in realtime with certain effect parameter settings … a classic example is the wipe transition which under some conditions might only play back in realtime with a hard edge, and would need to be rendered to do so with a soft edge, hence for best performance may play back with a hard edge, despite settings, until rendered.
Of course … as system, application and hardware performance has increased, it is thankfully more difficult to run into these situations, but to trigger the example offered you might try taking a simple HD clip, adding a (realtime) gaussian blur filter to it, and then dropping an edge wipe transition on the end.
Hope it helps

Use Bouke’s FCPreconnect utilty to link to the retransferred media. At only 60 bucks it’s something that should be in every FCP editors toolkit:

[walter biscardi] “All the infrastructure in my facility will support FCP, Premiere or Avid … “
Absolutely … Not exactly a recommended setup, but I have FCP 7, AVID MC5 and Adobe PP CS5 all installed on the same boot volume of my MBP, all running simultaneously (just for giggles) and as I switch back and forth between these active apps my MXO Mini MAX instantly switches to send the output from whichever is the frontmost app to my monitoring setup. Pointless to really run all three at the same time of course (my Mac doesn’t have enough RAM to handle all three apps efficiently) but its still cool to see everything working tickety-boo regardless of NLE.

Hey Nathan,
Don’t think you’ll find this is a native format/M2T issue … the OP already noted that he “cannot view .mov files encoded with the HDV2 codec.” ie the clips in question have already been wrapped as Quicktime .MOV files.
Cheers

Hi Jessica
As Shane notes, using the 30″ Apple Cinema Display with FCP’s Digital Cinema Desktop Preview mode would not be your ideal monitoring setup, given that you now have that Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme card which can provide you with a full broadcast quality monitoring output.
That said, if you don’t currently have a broadcast monitor or suitable reference monitoring display then of course you can use your 30″ ACD as your full screen desktop preview display, but to do so you will need to ensure that it is plugged in as the second display ie plugged into the second DVI output of your primary display card.
Hope it helps

Hey Timothy
Check you Sequence Settings > Audio Outputs tab … how many audio outputs are defined there? Is it more or less than, or as expected? Next check the Audio Output assignments from each audio track in your sequence (right click on or around each track’s Lock and/or Auto Select icon to show the context menu) … make sure that each track is assigned to the correct output. Physically, you’ll also want to make sure that your I/O hardware and monitoring setup is properly configured for the number of audio channels you are using.
Hope it helps

Hi Tom
That’s XDCAM HD. You could use Calibrated Software’s XD Decode QuickTime component (read only, about 90 bucks) but bear in mind that it conflicts with Apple’s own AppleHDVCodec.component bundle (read and write) that comes with FCP … so if you do decide to use it then you’d probably want to pull the latter out of the /Library/QuickTime folder until your done.
