FxScript plugins folders can be found in the root library folder (/library/application support/final cut pro system support) and also in the user library folder (~/library/preferences/final cut pro user data) and finally inside the app bundle itself (although they should never be installed there by a third pay or user) … as you noted in another thread, you eventually found them inside the app bundle … sounds like they may have been installed there in error by the Eureka installer.

That won’t work with HDV Jakob, unfortunately HDV is not output in real time from the timeline over Firewire as the nature of the codec prevents that. Your edit first needs to be “conformed” to a single unbroken GOP and then specially output back to your HDV camera/deck – this is all handled as part of the HDV “Print to Video” function … note that Edit To Tape does not work with HDV. But before you select this Print to Video function tho you’ll want to first ensure that your settings in FCP are correctly set for HDV output. Easiest is to first select the correct HDV Easy Setup that matches your format. When you’ve done that then you’ll want to double check everything … open FCP’s A/V Settings window and check that “Different Output for Edit to Tape/Print to Video” is checked, and that the settings there match the required HDV output format ie HDV (1440 x 1080) and HDV audio, and whilst you’re in the A/V Settings window you might also want to double check the Summary tab to see that the Device Control Preset is correctly set to Sony HDV Firewire.

Assuming all is good you can just go ahead and follow all the steps exactly as detailed in the manual:

To output your HDV sequence to tape
Make sure your camcorder is properly connected to your computer via FireWire.

Insert a DV tape into the HDV camcorder.

In the Browser, do one of the following:

Select a sequence or clip.

Double-click a sequence to open it in the Timeline.

Double-click a clip to open it in the Viewer.

Choose File > Print to Video.

The Print to Video dialog appears.

Select any leader or trailer elements you want to include on your tape, as well as start, end, and looping options.

Tip: If you want Final Cut Pro to start recording automatically, select the Automatically Start Recording checkbox.

Click OK.

If any segments of your sequence require rendering or conforming, Final Cut Pro renders and conforms them now. A progress dialog appears indicating the amount of time that remains until rendering and conforming are complete. Any segments of your sequence where GOP boundaries were broken (such as the frames around edit points or any frames with added filters, motion parameters, and so on) are conformed.

A second progress dialog briefly appears indicating the time it takes to process leader, trailer, and gap elements in your sequence.

A dialog appears when your sequence is ready for output.

If you did not select the Automatically Start Recording checkbox in the Print to Video dialog, press the record button on your camcorder or deck, then click OK.

If your tape is write-protected or if frames are dropped during the Print to Video operation, a dialog appears allowing you to try the operation again.

If it’s specifically the name of the source clip you need then an XML based solution like Andreas Kiel’s “TCR Plus” or Philip’s “Clip Info Reporter” are your only options, no method other than using XML is currently provided inside FCP to return that info. And very generally, can you make any predictions on when we might expect feature parity with respect to the existing but EOL’d XDCAM Transfer? Would this be something planned for a XDCAM Browser 1.x release or more likely a 2.0 kind of thing. Appreciate this might be tricky info to provide but am just looking for a general feel of things as it were. I have a number of XDCAM Transfer users to support (40+) so have some vested interest!

Ian, in your opinion looking at it from the inside as it were, is there any reason for those who currently use the Sony XDCAM Transfer app to import/export from/to XDCAM HD optical media (into FCP) to want to prefer this upcoming XDCAM Browser software for Import/Export operations over the older XDCAM Transfer software? Certainly, with foreground processing, it would seem to be a step back in this initial release.

On a side note, can I enquire as to whether any update for the FCP Log and Transfer plugin (PDZK-LT) is planned to allow access to XDCAM optical media, again, for users working with XDCAM HD rather than XDCAM EX formats?

I’d prefer the universal FCS project approach … and sure, if that native project format is an open and extensible format such as XML then all the better.
In such a scenario I’d see “round tripping” as no more than manipulating the current project inside any of the FCS apps … and no need to reinvent any of the job specific GUI’s (FCP, MOTN, COLOR, STP) just in order to make them sit prettier inside a single app approach.

An easy way to ensure you have the correct sequence settings is just to drag and drop any one of your imported XDCAM HD 422 clips into an empty sequence … FCP will ask you whether you want the sequence to match the clip and you can answer “Yes”. (This is assuming you’re not running on an old version of FCP. On that point, its worth noting that native XDCAM HD422 codec support in FCP wasn’t added until FCP 6.0.3).

The standard way of setting up your project tho, is to use an FCP “Easy Setup” … if you go to the Final Cut Pro menu and choose Easy Setup it’ll open up the Easy Setup window, change the “Format:” setting to “HD”, then scroll down through the list of settings in the “Use:” menu and right down at the bottom you should find the XDCAM HD422 setups. Select the appropriate one and press the Setup button. Then, importantly, create a new Sequence, the original one that was automatically created for you when you created the new project will have had the old settings applied. The new one you create will conform to the new settings you’ve just selected.

As Wayne notes, when you export back to disc you should use the File menu > Export > Sony XDCAM… and export as MXF. This action conforms your edit to a single unbroken MPEG HD Long GOP structure (which is XDCAM HD’s format) and then wraps that conformed file in an MXF container … and that MXF wraped file is then written directly back to a mounted XDCAM HD disc or to your hard disc (in which case you can later drag and drop it directly to an XDCAM HD disc’s CLIP folder, or you could the last time I tried).

The Long GOP conform process is usually the heartbreakingly slow part of the process but the actual write to disc should be fast.

Hey Clint

In FCP, you just need to add the Shift Fields filter to the affected areas … that will reverse the field order in those sections, make it all buttery smooth again.
Your client can do it in his original timeline, or you can just razor it up and do it at your end.
