AFAIK Not true … the beta Sony plugin included an Export option which worked well

sounds like a classic case of permissions issues. on the external media drives use “Get Info” to ensure that the “Ignore ownership on this volume” checkbox has been checked. also make sure that project files are quicktime exports are saved into a “Shared” location

“Quicktime Movie”>current setting> check make movie self contained movie … creates a new media file representing your edit without any recompression
“Quicktime Conversion”>defualt setting … creates a new media file representing your edit but with recompression to the default codec

unless you need to recompress to a different codec, then Export > Quicktime Movie… with current settings will give you the best quality

yes indeed, broadcast or otherwise, if this is going to be viewed on a standard consumer TV then you need to legalize the levels or you will run into trouble

But, just as important, we will also need to consider other factors (and I’m not talking about whether the client has sugar for their coffee). Specifically, we will at all times need to be aware that our final color corrected images are “broadcast legal”. Whatever we do, our final concern is that these beautiful new images won’t be rejected by the broadcaster. Even if the program is not going to be broadcast, but distributed on DVD or another medium, we still have to keep these goals in mind for the images to be accurately represented on consumer level televisions. Sometimes our color correction has less to do with creating a look, and more to do with making it legal.”

Well, I’ve certainly not ever done this, so I’m not talking from experience here. We all know that UB’s can be inserted on a frame by frame basis (you can do this from the front panel of any Sony beta deck given the time and inclination!), so my assumption is a) that given the right equipment the data should be able to be recorded, and b) the original poster has already done it

FCP should control any deck using the Firewire, if you have the requisite hardware then it has no problem using the RS422 protocol either.
