What version of FCP are you running there? You know, just to make life difficult there really are rather a lot of XDCAM HD codecs including the XDCAM EX strain which may be the footage you are working with. For that you need to be on FCP 6.0.3 or later …

That rather sounds like you have edited SD footage unscaled into an HD sequence … could that be possible? For best (most predictable) results, you need to ensure that your source footage and sequence setting match.

What are your source clip properties? (Select one of the clips and press CMD 9 to view the clip’s Item Properties > Format). And what are your sequence settings? (Select the sequence in the Browser and again press CMD 9 to view the sequence’s Item Properties > Format, or press CMD ZERO to view the Sequence Settings window)

I’m sorry man, but that workflow is outside my direct experience … I’m an XDCAM HD guy rather than XDCAM EX so I’m used to using XDCAM Transfer to view proxies of the high res rather than the high res itself. With the low res / low data rate proxies of course the playback is very easy.

That said, a 500GB hard disc is around 460GB of usable disc space and those 20 hrs or rushes must be running you about 320 GB or more .. if thats the case then you’re already fast approaching 80% full on that drive which is about when disc performance will start to be affected. Is your Lacie a single disc or a RAID pair (2×250) … if its a RAID then you should be good a while longer but if its a single drive then that might be the problem right there.

I’m sure some of the EX guys here will be able to weigh in with specific experience of the issue you’re having if its something more unusual, otherwise I’d be tempted to suggest you go ahead and test with a small sample of the same footage you’re having trouble with, but moved to another more suitable (faster, emptier) media drive and see if the problem persists.

I’m assuming you have already imported this footage using XDCAM Transfer, correct? And where have you imported the footage to, as you import location? If you want good performance from your compressed HD source footage then you need to store that footage on a suitable fast external hard drive, not the internal start up disc which is already quite busy enough hosting the operating system and your various active applications. Bottom line, you need good fast dedicated storage for your media.

If thats not the issue Henning, maybe you could post some more specific info regarding your hardware and software setup and your workflow then we’ll be better able to have a bash at helping you troubleshoot the problem.

I’d recommend you use a Audio Unit Manager to disable unneeded audio plugins when working in FCP, quite apart from the long startup delays, some can be altogether incompatible with FCP anyway.

Yes, But do be careful to ensure that your target device will be able to handle the signal you provide it. For example, when I was testing with an F70 XDCAM HD deck I noted that it would record embedded audio input over SD SDI (with the SD option board installed) but would not record embedded audio input over HD-SDI … am investigating this issue at the moment, could be deck specific, but it is a worthwhile reminder to check all aspects of your intended workflow well in advance.

Yes Jurriaan, the MXO (or MXO2) will allow you to do exactly what you are asking for ie to play directly from your FCP timeline to an SDI output … the MXO connects through your Mac’s DVI port to provide an SDI/Component/Composite video output device. No, the HDLink Pro does not do the same thing, actually it does the opposite, taking an SDI input and converts that to DVI output (amongst others).

Ok, I want to play too … so have at it.

1) First using FCP’s built in Levels filter to fix the exposure

2) Then fixing up the color using FCP’s built in Color Corrector 3-Way

3) And finally a touch of FCP’s built in Vignette filter just because I like Top Gear (and why not eh?)
