Matrox mxo and FCP
Posted by Jurriaan Van der kamp on February 26, 2009 at 10:59 amI am thinking of buying a matrox mxo. i am hoping to play out my open FCP sequence(imx 30/50)to the Matrox and get an sdi output that i can beam up to satellite or record in any way for broadcast. The writing back to xdcam sony 530 coast me about an hour for a half hour sequence this is way to long! Is the Matrox mxo sooted for this job? Can i also use the Matrox to improve the playout to my plasma tv at home? Does a Blackmagic HDLink Pro do the same thing. Many qustions! Who can help me?

Don’t know about the Blackmagic, but the MXO does all that for me. It has SDI and component outputs.

If you are price concious the MXO is a good choice. however ther earer other players in the game that can help you here. You might also look at AJA and Black Magic.

February 26, 2009 at 4:51 pmYes Jurriaan, the MXO (or MXO2) will allow you to do exactly what you are asking for ie to play directly from your FCP timeline to an SDI output … the MXO connects through your Mac’s DVI port to provide an SDI/Component/Composite video output device. No, the HDLink Pro does not do the same thing, actually it does the opposite, taking an SDI input and converts that to DVI output (amongst others).
Hope it helps

February 26, 2009 at 6:40 pmThanks Andy,
So the signal that comes out of the sdi output, can it be recorded on a xdcam deck or a harddisc or even back to the sony 530 xd cam? What “format” or “codec” is this signal anyway. Can the open fcp sequence also be played straight on to a plasma tv using dvi out i suppose?

Yes.
[jurriaan van der kamp] “What “format” or “codec” is this signal anyway.”
There is no CODEC when outputting this way. There is a SIGNAL. And the signal is what you are sending. If your footage is 1080i at 29.97, then it outputs 1080i 29.97. If it is 720p 23.98, it outputs 720p 23.98.

Yes, But do be careful to ensure that your target device will be able to handle the signal you provide it. For example, when I was testing with an F70 XDCAM HD deck I noted that it would record embedded audio input over SD SDI (with the SD option board installed) but would not record embedded audio input over HD-SDI … am investigating this issue at the moment, could be deck specific, but it is a worthwhile reminder to check all aspects of your intended workflow well in advance.

March 4, 2009 at 1:32 pmI just got my MXO2 a few weeks ago, and WOW!! This little box rocks!
I use it at my home studio with my MacPro and the versatility of this box really is a +. I hook it up to my Sharp Aquos for my main preview monitor via the HDMI output. Most of my work now of days is delivering SD material but I shoot everything in HD. The quality of the scaler is fantastic. This is a great product, check it out.
(Jurriaan, I was thinking of getting the MXO but for the differnce in price I decided to go with the MXO2…a side benefit is that with the HDMI out I could have actually used the Sharp Aquos for work and my wife likes that.)An Artist At Heart.
