Adding a drop shadow to your work will require FCP to render everytime. Talked to Apple about it at NAB last year and they know a simple drop shadow will bring FCP to its knees. Hopefully they can find a solution.

Ben Waggoner has a training DVD on the program. I got it for free from a dealer I ordered Squeeze 4.1 from.

December 7, 2005 at 8:35 am in reply to: Lacie Drives stink–any other suggestions?

I had 6 Lacie drives go bad in the last year, so ad me to the Lacie failure rate. Bottom line, Lacie figures the number of failures is within spec and will replace them and move on. They sell thousands of drives around the world and the few people that speak up about their failures doesn’t even make a dent in their bottom line. So vote with your wallet and buy another product!

Anyone want to buy my lacie drives 🙂

Just to ad to the wierdness, I made some reference movies from three FCP sequences today. All the same settings. When I drop them into a Compressor batch, each time I select the same Fast encode setting, the field setting was different for each one. First one was progressive, the next lower field, the last upper field…..strange all right.

[Gabriel Regalbuto] “I heard the team that was supposed to handle this stuff is coding for the iPod.”

Oh great, now we will never get compressor fixed right 🙂 All that compression for a 2X2 screen. What about the rest of us that encode for larger monitors!

Main thing to check is amount of ram slots. If you only have four ram slots, it is not a PCI-x. If it has eight, then it has PCI-x slots.

Compressor still sems broken to me. Just export your FCP Sequence as a QuickTime movie….I know a whole waisted step, when it used to work in version 1.0. Close FCP and then open up compressor and process your QT file. Be sure to check your encoding setting, as some of the compressor presets are defaulting to upper field when I need lower.

I just started another file in compressor and when it was done, the MPEG2 portion of my batch was missing. Strange little bugs in this release. oh well, back to another 30 minute encode.

November 28, 2005 at 4:57 pm in reply to: Why A quad is being delivered to me this week….

[Deadhead] ” I also have a Silence Case coming this week- a custom built huge isolation box that will hold 2 towers and 2 raids.- that should be fun reconfiguring all this at once, extending cables to come out of the box through grommets, etc.”

How will this case stay cool? recycling warm air will not be good for your quad. Just wondering if you ahve to ad additional air con to this equation. What has Silent case told you about the possible need for additional cooling?

Regarding your 500gig drive: remember it won’t format out to the full 500 gigs. Maybe get two drives just for safety to make sure you have enough room.

What are you feeding the IO as your reference signal?

Are you using a Horita BlackBurst Generator or just looping the refence from the deck?

    What are your Driver versions?

What format are you feeding the IO? (BetaSP, DVCPRO, DV etc.)

Are you seeing the horizontal shift on your external production monitor or just your computer monitor?

November 23, 2005 at 9:16 pm in reply to: Number 27, your render is ready

maybe I’m missing your point, but doesn’t your FCP software render when you leave it alone and are working in another app? My system does 🙂 I leave FCP open and go into Photoshop or AE for a while, when I come back into FCP, the Render menu box is laying ontop saying render complete. Is it not in the preferences that you can set it to start rendering after a certain amount of time when FCP is not active. Not trying to stir up a cat fight, but maybe you need to check your preferences and see if it will start rendering for you.

Now the chime or bell issue is another matter. I don’t kow how many times After Effects scared the hell out of me in the middle of the night with its render done chime! maybe we can all submit some tips to Apple’s feedback form and get the ball rolling.
