Seeing as how the objects already have the pixelated look you’re going for, couldn’t you just use “Best” quality, but add an adjustment layer with a harsh sharpening filter to hide the anti-aliasing?

Remember that AE doesn’t render fields, only frames, when creating on screen previews/RAM previews. If your incoming footage has fields interpreted, AE will only ever display 1 of the 2 fields on your computer monitor, making it look like lower resolution. You can get around it by temporarily turning OFF field interpretation while you do design work, but be sure to turn it back on before rendering if you are going to render fields.

Hi Jim,
The problem appears to be that Null 6 is defined with non-square pixels. Change the PAR of the Null and the ring (of rings) becomes an oval which moves consistently. Change the PAR of the tunnel comp to square pix as well and the ring becomes a perfect circle.

I don’t think demuxing is the issue here. You can use Quicktime Pro (with the MPEG2 Playback component installed) to load an m2v file, then export it to any form of Quicktime file. Of course, you won’t regain the quality/information lost during the compression to MPEG2.

Definitely the processor, not the graphics card. If you were relying heavily on a GPU-intensive application like Motion, the decision might be different, but in AE land the CPU is the most important factor.

Soundtrack Pro (bundled with the new Final Cut Studio) has a pretty decent noise removal filter.

You can export swf files from Quicktime Pro to many standard formats. Best 39 bucks you’ll ever spend.

That entirely depends on what kind of job you’re applying for. If you are seeking a job as a Flame compositor, there’s not much point showing off your DVD authoring skills. But if you are speaking to a production company who makes TV spots, DVDs and corporate videos, they will almost certainly WANT you to be a jack of all trades.
If you have an extensive range of skills and plan to apply for very diverse jobs, it may pay to cut separate reels which demonstrate specific skills.
