What is the resolution of your AE comp? What video codecs do your source footage items use? And what codec are you rendering output to?

  • No, the whole point of converting is to STOP things looking squished. If you are correctly interpreting square pixel material in AE, then rendering with AE Preset NTSC settings, and maintaining those settings throughout the editing and authoring processes, your images will not look squished.

August 10, 2005 at 2:13 am in reply to: Urgent Invigorator help!!! Please!!

The problem lies in the eps files – they are not made with Invigorator in mind. Invigorator artwork needs to be discreetly seperated as objects so that each object can be extruded, bevelled and have materials applied.

The BMW logo, for example, has several problems. The letter B is made up of 3 paths, but the two “holes” in the B are not actually holes in the outer path, they are black objects placed on top of the B. Invigorator can’t extrude a B from three seperate Illustrator objects, so you need to make one compound path that has holes cut out of the main outer path with the two inner paths.

Your best bet is to seperate elements in Illustrator that you need to move or add materials to individually, create compound paths where necessary, place them on independent layers and then import to Invigorator.

If you post an email address I’ll send you the BMW logo corrected so you get my drift.

You’ve done a very nice job, but here’s a few opinions:

The music sounds Current Affairs, but the font looks Cartoon Network. Choose one much more conservative typeface.

The music is full of big stabs and accents, but you’ve only used one or two of them. When the music goes bang, so should the visuals.

In the big white box at the beginning, you reveal main vision with the smaller squares of headshots, but there is a vision cut during that reveal which looks clunky. Stick with one shot until the reveal is complete.

The masking and moves of the blue photo boxes is clumsy and inconsistent. You need to smooth out the moves and the mask changes – probably more linear moves.

The occasional white lines in those photo boxes seem inconsistent. Either all framed by lines or no lines, if you ask me.

Cycore have some demo projects which demonstrate some of their plugins.

If you have AE6.5 with Cycore Effects, and if the scratch is not TOO wide, you can use CC Wire Removal to smear the adjoining pixels, which will make the scratch less obvious. This will still require a fair bit of work to animate the movement of the scratch, as the dirt/hair that caused it moves around in the camera gate. Otherwise, dependng on the footage and it’s composition, and if the scratch is on an extreme side of the footage, you could re-telecine the footage and adjust the scanned frame area to not include the scratch.

The only time DPI is relevant between PS and AE is if you are cutting and pasting mask shapes between the two, in which case 72dpi is the one to use. Otherwise, DPI is completely irrelevant to video. There are no inches in the video world.

Make sure you have installed the AE 6.5.1 patch, which addresses a slow-down issue on some systems.

  • Seeing as how the objects already have the pixelated look you’re going for, couldn’t you just use “Best” quality, but add an adjustment layer with a harsh sharpening filter to hide the anti-aliasing?
