  • NEED HELP… Covert swf file to usuable media format

Posted by Eric Christians on July 6, 2005 at 5:46 pm

If anyone can give some advice/wisdom I would greatly appreciate it…

Got a animated logo from a client that was built for his website and he wants to use it in his tv commercial…
Problem…What the client gave me was a swf file..!!arrrrgh!!
I need to convert this swf file to a useable media format…avi, mov, jpeg sequence, tga sequence..anything that AE or Premiere can handle…
I have AfterEffects 5.0 Pro, Premiere 6.0 and Photoshop 7.0 on my system…Can access AE 6.5 Pro, Premiere Pro 1.5 and Photoshop CS 1 on a different system if needs be…
Or is there a freeware out there that would do the conversion???

Sorry for the rush but the project is due this week and this client is a total grinder (aren’t they all)

The newer versions of AE can handle (import) SWF–sometimes only. You can also install FLASH, import the SWF, then export to tiffs.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks Arie,

    I’ll give it a try…
I also found a freeware convertor so I am planning to install that too and try it….
Gotta finish a revision on another spot first…
Thanks for the advice…If I need more help I’ll post again on this thread….
    Thanks again Arie

If the Flash-animation relies solely on keyframing, you can export it to Tiffs from Flash, and it might even import OK as is in After Effects via Quicktime.
However, if some of the animation uses clever Action-script programming to move around: you’re pretty much stuck.
Exporting inn Flash will totally ignore the programmed effects.

You can export swf files from Quicktime Pro to many standard formats. Best 39 bucks you’ll ever spend.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions….Nice to see there are so many helpful AE souls out there…
Finally found a solution late last night…
(sorry for not posting sooner but I really was craving some time away from a computer monitor)

I tried to import it into AE 6.5 and it load just fine but was a bit jumpy on the rendered out version….Tinkered a bit on some the render settings but with no luck…
Before I pulled out all my hair and seek the consultation of Mr. Daniels, I download a freeware program from http://www.download.com called Magic SWF2AVI….it has a 15 day trial period but was able to import my little swf file into this application and output it to either an avi, tga sequence or tiff sequence – with or without alpha channel….
Then it was just a hop, skip and jump away from using it in AE and Premiere…..
Thanks again for everyone’s help…it is so appreciated….
    Sincerely
    Eric Christians
